Apple Introduces Its First Touchscreen MacBook Pro

The CSR Journal Magazine

Apple has officially launched its first touchscreen MacBook Pro, marking a departure from its previous stance against touch controls on laptops. This announcement was made during the company’s “Pro and Tell” event on Wednesday. The new MacBook Pro is equipped with an OLED display, touch gesture support, and is powered by Apple’s M5 Pro and M5 Max processors. Additionally, the laptop features a redesigned interface and a lighter build compared to its predecessors.

In India, the pricing for the new MacBook Pro starts at Rs 3,49,900 for the 14-inch model and Rs 4,09,900 for the 16-inch variant. The laptop is set to be available for purchase starting November 9.

The introduction of a touchscreen is the most significant enhancement to the MacBook Pro. Users can now scroll through documents, zoom in on images, and directly annotate content on the display. Apple asserts that this feature will enhance professional workflows, enabling designers to manipulate 3D models and music producers to make adjustments using touch controls.

Display and Performance Enhancements

The new MacBook Pro features a tandem OLED display, which Apple has branded as PROLED XDR. This display promises deeper blacks, enhanced contrast, and improved colour accuracy. It supports a refresh rate of up to 120Hz through ProMotion technology, with peak brightness reaching 2,000 nits for HDR content. Apple is also offering a nano-texture option designed to minimise reflections.

Under the hood, the laptop is powered by the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, which are tailored for demanding tasks such as video editing, 3D rendering, software development, and artificial intelligence workloads. Apple claims that these processors include Neural Accelerators within their GPU cores to expedite AI-related tasks. Storage options can go up to 16TB, with the company asserting that the new models offer up to twice the storage speed compared to previous versions.

Additional improvements include a redesigned thermal system, an enhanced six-speaker audio setup, a studio-quality three-microphone array, and support for Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6. The laptop retains various ports, including HDMI, an SDXC card slot, MagSafe 3, and a headphone jack, along with three Thunderbolt 5 ports.

Significance of the Touchscreen Feature

Apple’s introduction of a touchscreen on the MacBook Pro is particularly noteworthy, given the company’s historical reluctance to embrace this technology. In 2010, co-founder Steve Jobs referred to touchscreen laptops as “ergonomically terrible.” Two years later, former CEO Tim Cook voiced his opposition to merging tablets and laptops, likening the concept to combining a toaster with a refrigerator.

Prior to this launch, Apple had experimented with the Touch Bar, a touch-sensitive strip that replaced function keys on MacBook Pro models introduced in 2016. However, the company reverted to physical function keys in its 2021 redesign and ultimately discontinued the Touch Bar in 2023.

The new MacBook Pro signifies a pivotal shift in Apple’s approach, integrating direct touch interaction into its flagship laptop while maintaining the traditional keyboard and trackpad experience. This development may reshape how users engage with the MacBook Pro in both personal and professional settings.
