The CSR Journal Magazine

A gurdwara in the Ludhiana district of Punjab was reportedly targeted early on Wednesday by two masked individuals who fired multiple shots at the room of the head sewadar. This incident occurred at approximately 3 am at Gurdwara Manji Sahib, located in Rajoana Kalan village. The head sewadar, Baldev Singh, was unharmed as he was in an adjacent bathroom during the attack, according to reports from the Press Trust of India.

Singh had opened the main gate of the gurdwara prior to entering the bathroom. After hearing the gunfire, he quickly locked the bathroom door and remained inside until the assailants had departed. Once he was certain it was safe, he raised an alarm and contacted the police for assistance.

Police Response and Investigation

Following the incident, Ludhiana Rural Senior Superintendent of Police Ankur Gupta and other senior officers arrived at the scene to oversee the situation. The Sudhar police have since registered a case against unidentified individuals involved in the shooting. Investigators are currently reviewing CCTV footage from the gurdwara to identify the attackers.

CCTV footage recovered from the premises shows the two masked men entering the gurdwara. Additionally, police teams are examining video recordings from cameras installed on roads leading to the village to ascertain the escape route used by the assailants. Inspector Rajvarinder Pal Singh, the Station House Officer of Sudhar, confirmed that footage from surrounding areas is also being scrutinised to aid in identifying the suspects.

This latest shooting incident follows another attack that occurred just a day earlier, where armed individuals fired at the main gate of Gurdwara Sri Gopalsar Sahib in Gagra village, near Jagraon. During that incident, a threatening letter was allegedly thrown at the head sewadar and other religious and political figures, raising concerns about safety in the region.

Concerns Over Security in the Region

The recent spate of attacks on gurdwaras in Ludhiana has heightened fears regarding the safety of religious institutions in the area. The police are under pressure to enhance security measures and ensure the safety of worshippers. Community leaders have expressed their apprehension over the pattern of violence targeting Sikh shrines, which could potentially escalate tensions within the community.

Authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to law enforcement. The police have reassured the public that they are taking these incidents seriously and are committed to investigating thoroughly to bring the perpetrators to justice.

As investigations continue, the local community is left grappling with the implications of these attacks on their places of worship. The police are expected to increase patrols and surveillance around gurdwaras to prevent further incidents and restore a sense of security among the devotees.
