The CSR Journal Magazine

Five members of one family burnt alive in a moving car on Thursday while driving on Delhi-Mumbai Expressway in Alwar district, Rajasthan. The driver is critically injured and is undergoing treatment.

This incident happened near Maujpur village under the Laxmangarh police station area, the family was returning to Madhya Pradesh after completing their pilgrimage to the Vaishno Devi Temple shrine. As per police the victims hailed from Chainpura village in Sheopur district of Madhya Pradesh. Victims have been identified as Santosh, his wife Shashi, mother Parvati, and daughters Raghani and Sakshi.

Why did a moving car catch fire?

The initial findings suggest that there was a short circuit in the car, possibly CNG leaked and caused the fire. As the vehicle was CNG-powered, fire spread immediately, within minutes the complete vehicle turned into a fireball, leaving all the passengers trapped inside, giving no time to escape. The Additional Superintendent of Police Priyanka Raghuvanshi shared with media that on receiving information of the accident, the fire brigade teams rushed to the spot, within 15 minutes fire was controlled, but by that time the vehicle was completely burnt. Talking about the condition of the passengers, the Deputy Superintendent of Police Kailash Jindal said due to the fire, only the skeletal remains were recovered from the vehicle. “We have preserved the remains separately, and have been sent to a lab for DNA testing.”

Driver Battles for Life, Investigation Underway

Amongst the passengers onboard, only the driver managed to jump outside the vehicle, he has suffered 80 percent burn injuries. Immediately he was taken to the nearest health centre and later shifted to Jaipur for advanced treatment. Investigation into the matter is on to find out the key reason behind the fire. Technical experts are also examining if there was some technical glitch in the CNG system. This incident has once again raised serious concerns over the safety of long distance travel using CNG vehicles.
