The CSR Journal Magazine

The inaugural journey of the Vande Bharat Express from Jammu concluded at Nowgam Railway Station in Srinagar on April 30, 2023, representing a significant advancement in rail connectivity for the Kashmir Valley. This historic event has garnered positive reactions from passengers, local officials, and residents, all of whom see it as a transformative opportunity for travel and economic growth in the region.

Official Remarks on the New Train

Chief Area Manager Kapil Sharma expressed that the arrival of the train was an emotional occasion for both local residents and Indians at large. He emphasised that the upgraded service would alleviate congestion and enhance travel convenience. “The previous Vande Bharat service had only eight coaches and was consistently at full capacity. With the new train, the capacity has been significantly increased to accommodate approximately 1,450 passengers,” he noted.

Sharma articulated the anticipated benefits of the service across various sectors of society. He stated that the improved rail connectivity would advantage a diverse array of individuals, including labourers, officials, traders, students, patients, and tourists, thereby supporting both tourism and local industries. The train is expected to encourage economic activity in the region.

Local sentiments about the service were echoed by passengers at the Budgam and Srinagar stations. Nadeem Ahmed Lohar stated that the train would lessen reliance on road travel, which faces frequent disruptions. He remarked, “Travel was often costly and disrupted by weather conditions; this train will relieve a lot of that burden.”

Passenger Experiences and Feedback

The inaugural journey received positive feedback from those onboard. Annu Gupta, who was part of the first trip, described her experience as smooth and efficient, noting it took only four and a half hours to reach its destination. “The connectivity will enhance tourism and save both time and money,” she asserted.

Students also shared their thoughts on the impact of the new service. Waseem Ahmed Khan highlighted that frequent travellers would benefit notably from the direct connection, stating, “It eliminates the previous difficulties faced while travelling through Banihal.” He added that the new service would also assist students, sports enthusiasts, and tourists.

Another benefit mentioned by passengers is the all-weather reliability of the rail link, particularly advantageous during winter months when highways are more likely to be shut. The new train service aims to provide consistent connectivity year-round for the region.

Official Launch and Future Prospects

On the same day, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw officiated the launch of the extended Jammu Tawi-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express. The train is set to commence regular service starting from May 2, 2023. Officials anticipate that the operationalisation of this train service will bring long-term benefits to the region, particularly in terms of enhancing travel efficiency and supporting the local economy.

The addition of the Vande Bharat Express significantly enhances rail options for the Kashmir Valley, encouraging a shift towards rail transport, which is seen as a more reliable and convenient mode of travel for residents and visitors alike. With the service now operational, local communities are poised to harness the potential advantages this new railway link offers.
