Fifty-Eight Engineering Colleges Closed in India During 2025-26

According to the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), India’s engineering education sector has contracted, with fifty-eight engineering and technical colleges experiencing “progressive closure” during the academic year 2025-26. This decision affects the admission of new first-year students, although those already enrolled will be permitted to complete their courses.

States Reporting Most Closures

The highest number of closures has been reported in Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra, with twelve colleges each ceasing operations. Following these states, Madhya Pradesh reported seven closures, while Telangana and Punjab witnessed six and five respectively. An additional sixteen closures occurred across other states, resulting in a total of fifty-eight institutions being affected.

Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra have topped the closure list, revealing significant implications for students in those regions. The continuing trend in these states indicates challenges faced in the engineering education sector, prompting a realignment of resources and support for remaining institutions.

Despite these closures, it should be noted that the affected colleges will continue to support existing students until they finish their studies. This arrangement offers a measure of stability to those currently enrolled and helps mitigate disruption in their education.

Understanding Progressive Closure

AICTE has defined “progressive closure” as a process whereby colleges gradually cease new admissions rather than closing abruptly. This allows for ongoing educational support for current students, ensuring they can complete their programmes as planned. The aim is to transition the institute towards full closure while maintaining educational standards for those who have already committed to the courses.

This structured approach aims to avoid sudden disruptions in the learning experience of existing students. Institutions that undergo progressive closure will not accept new incoming students, focusing instead on allowing current students to achieve their educational qualifications without unnecessary interruptions.

AICTE has not disclosed specific reasons for the closure of individual institutions, yet several overarching challenges have been identified. Engineering colleges have increasingly struggled with declining admission rates, financial sustainability, and shifting student interests. The rise of new fields such as artificial intelligence and data science has further influenced students’ choices regarding their educational paths.

As student preferences evolve, many educational institutions are adjusting their programmes to stay competitive. There is a notable shift towards offering industry-focused courses and updated curricula designed to enhance employability in a rapidly changing job market.
