Farmers Protest Against Punjab Government’s Drone Plans for Stubble Management

The CSR Journal Magazine

Farmers affiliated with the Bharatiya Kisan Union (Ekta Ugrahan) have been protesting outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Sangrur, Punjab, challenging the state government’s decision to utilise drones for monitoring stubble burning. The protesters have occupied all three entrances to the office, voicing their concerns over 13 specific demands related to stubble management.

A significant gathering of farmers, including many women, has assembled for the demonstration, effectively preventing government officials and employees from accessing the premises. This protest is a continuation of their efforts, which began on Tuesday, aimed at compelling the government to address their grievances more effectively.

BK Ugrahan, president of the farmers’ organisation, has expressed dissatisfaction with the administration’s focus on surveillance rather than providing satisfactory solutions for the disposal of stubble. He pointed out that while plans are being made to deploy drones, adequate arrangements for managing stubble burning remain absent, leaving farmers with unresolved issues.

Concerns Raised by Women Farmers

Women involved in the protest have voiced their disapproval of the Punjab government’s proposal to offer Rs 1,000 financial assistance to women as a pre-election gesture ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections. They believe that substantive solutions to their challenges are more crucial than temporary financial support.

These farmers have called upon Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to tackle the prevalent drug problem in rural areas, citing addiction as a significant factor contributing to familial tragedies. The sentiments expressed by the women are indicative of their desire for more substantial actions from the government, rather than token financial aid.

Furthermore, the women farmers have also demanded that the Deputy Commissioner engage directly with the protesting individuals to address their concerns instead of remaining absent from the site. This demand highlights their need for official recognition and response to their issues.

Farmers Remain Firm on Their Demands

The protesting farmers have confirmed that they will maintain their demonstration until the Punjab government provides tangible commitments regarding their 13 demands. Ugrahan mentioned that the government has reached out with a proposal for a meeting involving key figures such as Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, Cabinet Minister Aman Arora, and Agriculture Minister Gurmeet Singh Khuddian.

However, there has been confusion regarding the scheduled date for this meeting. While one source indicates the meeting is set for October 13 at 11 am at Punjab Bhawan, Ugrahan’s comments suggest an earlier date of October 11. The finalised date has yet to be officially confirmed.

In addition to stubble management, Ugrahan brought attention to the escalating issue of farmer debt, alleging that existing government policies are making agriculture increasingly unsustainable. The blockage of the Sangrur Deputy Commissioner’s office signifies the determination of the farmers to continue their protest until their demands are adequately addressed and they receive the necessary assurances from the government.
