Political Tensions Rise Over Drought Situation in Gujarat’s Saurashtra

The CSR Journal Magazine

The ongoing agrarian crisis in Gujarat’s Saurashtra region has led to a significant political confrontation, with the Congress party demanding a formal drought declaration. Senior Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala has expressed alarm over the adverse impact of erratic rainfall and moisture stress on crops in rural areas. He has called for immediate action from the state government to officially recognise drought-hit regions, which would enable farmers to access financial compensation and relief measures.

Surjewala highlighted critical issues such as frequent power outages affecting agricultural operations. He claimed that farmers are unable to effectively utilise tube wells during essential crop cycles due to these interruptions. Additionally, he pointed out that major irrigation projects, including the Saurashtra Narmada Avtaran Irrigation initiative, remain incomplete, particularly at the tail-end farms where water scarcity is most acute.

In his statements, Surjewala noted the economic challenges faced by small and marginal farmers, citing rising input costs, increasing agricultural debts, and delays in crop insurance payments. He warned of potential grassroots mobilisations in districts like Morbi and Rajkot, asserting that the Congress party would organise large farmer rallies and protests until comprehensive relief measures, loan waivers, and reliable power supply are assured for the agricultural community.

BJP Responds to Allegations of Mismanagement

In response to the Congress’s accusations, Anil Patel, the chief spokesperson for the Gujarat BJP, dismissed the claims as misleading. He accused the opposition of attempting to mislead the public and clarified that the monsoon season officially lasts until October 15. Patel stated that the state administration is actively assessing the situation on the ground.

Patel noted that lower rainfall has been recorded in only two to three districts, where official surveys are currently being conducted to determine any potential crop losses. He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to the agricultural sector, citing the achievements of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel’s administration and the central government in supporting farmers.

The BJP spokesperson emphasised that the Congress’s allegations are unfounded and aimed at creating confusion. He mentioned that between 2016 and 2026, the BJP government has announced financial relief packages 16 to 17 times, with over 10,000 crore Rs provided during unseasonal rain events. Additionally, he highlighted that the central government has allocated over 70,000 crore Rs to farmers under the PM Kisan Nidhi scheme, alongside a policy of zero-interest agricultural loans.

Future Actions and Assessments Planned

Patel further stated that senior cabinet ministers and dedicated committees within the Bhupendra Patel administration are continuously monitoring electricity and water distribution across agricultural zones. He assured that official survey teams have been deployed to assess localised yield impacts, indicating that the government is taking proactive measures in response to the situation.

The ongoing political discourse underscores the high stakes involved in agrarian welfare in Saurashtra. As the Congress party prepares for state-wide agitations, the BJP maintains that administrative reviews will dictate all necessary relief interventions. The situation remains fluid, with both parties poised to influence the outcome of the ongoing agricultural crisis in the region.

As the state grapples with these challenges, the focus remains on the farmers who are directly affected by the evolving circumstances. The political landscape in Gujarat continues to be shaped by the pressing need for effective solutions to the agrarian distress in Saurashtra.
