The Election Commission of India (ECI) announced that 700 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) will remain stationed in West Bengal following the conclusion of polling on April 29. This measure aims to ensure law and order until further notice is given.
This decision stems from a deployment plan outlined by the ECI on March 19, in anticipation of the West Bengal Assembly elections scheduled for 2026. The commission had previously deployed a total of 2,400 CAPF companies during the second phase of the elections in the state.
Special Electoral Roll Observer Subrata Gupta emphasised the importance of these arrangements. He stated that robust preparations were in place for the second phase of polling, which encompassed 41,001 polling stations across eight districts in South Bengal.
Security Regulations for the Polling Process
Gupta further detailed the security measures in place. Some CAPF contingents will be equipped with body cameras to enhance transparency and accountability. All strong room complexes, which house ballot boxes, will be guarded by CAPF personnel adhering to strict security protocols.
The deployment of Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras at entry points to the strong rooms has been implemented, with footage made accessible to candidates and their agents. This move aims to bolster the security of the election process.
In terms of on-ground security, each polling booth will be staffed by a minimum of four security personnel. Additionally, webcams have been installed at every booth, with one positioned inside and another outside to monitor activities effectively.
Political Landscape Amidst Elections
The second phase of polling in West Bengal is considered a critical moment for the Trinamool Congress (TMC), as it covers the party’s strongholds in South Bengal and Kolkata. This phase is anticipated to serve as a bellwether for the TMC’s performance in the overall elections.
The primary contest in West Bengal appears to be between the TMC and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), as both parties vie for dominance in the region. Political analysts look to this phase as indicative of the potential outcomes in the forthcoming elections.
Results for the West Bengal polls are set to be announced on May 4, alongside outcomes for other states, including Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry. The upcoming results will be closely monitored, reflecting the political sentiments of the electorate across these states.
