The CSR Journal Magazine

An elderly Sikh couple was tragically shot dead within a gurdwara located in Mardan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, Pakistan, on 18 June 2026. The victims, identified as 70-year-old Jagannath and his wife, Asma Wanti, served as caretakers of the gurdwara situated in Babu Mohalla, Khwaja Ganj Bazaar. Reports indicate that the assailants reportedly entered the compound and opened fire at close range before fleeing the scene immediately after the attack.

Law enforcement agencies, including local police and Rescue 1122 personnel, arrived at the site shortly after the incident to conduct an investigation. They have begun gathering evidence and testimonies in hopes of identifying the shooters. The police have also cordoned off the area to preserve any potential evidence.

Witnesses described a scene of chaos and fear as shots rang out inside the religious site, which is ordinarily regarded as a safe haven for the community. The attack has raised serious concerns regarding the safety and security of minority groups residing in Pakistan.

Community and Political Reactions

The brutal shooting has elicited widespread condemnation from various groups, including political leaders in India. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders expressed their outrage, highlighting ongoing issues regarding the protection of religious minorities in Pakistan. They noted that such incidents are emblematic of a broader climate of insecurity faced by these communities.

BJP National General Secretary Tarun Chugh decried the incident, pointing to Pakistan’s failure to fulfil commitments made under the Nehru-Liaquat Pact of 1950, which aimed to ensure the safety of minorities in both nations. He asserted that this latest incident is yet another sign of the deteriorating situation for religious minorities within Pakistan.

Additionally, BJP national spokesperson R.P. Singh echoed similar sentiments, describing the killings as a stark reminder of the fear and persecution that continue to affect these communities. Singh emphasised that the world must take note of Pakistan’s continued inability to safeguard the rights of its minority populations.

Investigation and Ongoing Concerns

Following the incident, a formal investigation has been launched, with law enforcement working to track down the assailants, who remain at large. The police have called for community cooperation in identifying any suspicious individuals who may have been present in the area at the time of the shooting.

Local Sikh community leaders have voiced their deep concern over the apparent disregard for the safety of religious minorities in the region. They are calling for enhanced security measures to ensure the protection of places of worship and the individuals who attend them.

This tragic event has highlighted ongoing tensions and issues surrounding the treatment of minority groups in Pakistan. As investigations continue, questions regarding the broader implications of such violence on communal harmony remain at the forefront of public discourse. Protecting the rights and safety of all individuals, regardless of their faith, remains a critical issue that needs to be addressed during these tumultuous times.
