Eight Arrested for Alleged Terror Plot Targeting Delhi’s Red Fort and Temples

The CSR Journal Magazine

Authorities have apprehended eight individuals suspected of connections to Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and extremist organizations based in Bangladesh in separate operations across Tamil Nadu and West Bengal. This move comes amid intelligence alerts highlighting a potential terror scheme aimed at significant historical and religious locations in Delhi, including the Red Fort and prominent temples.

Delhi Police reported that six of the suspects were detained from various sites within Tamil Nadu, such as Uthukuli, Palladam, and Thirumuruganpoondi, while two additional suspects were captured in West Bengal during follow-up actions. Investigators suspect that some of those detained could be Bangladeshi nationals, and all individuals are being transferred to Delhi for further questioning.

The operation was initiated following specific intelligence suggesting that the suspects were part of a module planning to conduct subversive activities across India. A police source mentioned that numerous mobile phones and SIM cards were seized during the arrests, which are now under examination to identify a broader network and potential foreign coordinators.

According to ongoing investigations, the group reportedly communicated via social media platforms and had allegedly expressed support for terrorist factions based in Pakistan. Four of the detainees had previously visited Delhi, where they reportedly placed “Free Kashmir” posters at a metro station during an international summit, before returning to their respective home states.

During searches conducted in Tamil Nadu, police recovered eight mobile devices and 16 SIM cards. Reports indicate that some of the suspects were employed within the garment sector, allegedly utilizing forged Aadhaar cards to obscure their actual identities.

Increased Security Measures Following Recent Intelligence Alerts

The arrests coincide with heightened security protocols instituted in the national capital, initiated after security forces issued a high alert. Intelligence reports indicated that the Pakistan-based terrorist organization Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) had targeted key religious sites for potential assaults. Specific areas surrounding the Red Fort and portions of Chandni Chowk were recognized as particularly sensitive.

Sources indicated a temple located within the Chandni Chowk area might be a likely target for an attack, with potential plans involving the use of an improvised explosive device (IED). These alleged intentions are thought to be retaliation for a mosque explosion that occurred on February 6 in Islamabad.

In response to the threat, security around significant religious and historical landmarks in Delhi has been enhanced. Measures taken include an increase in CCTV surveillance and vehicle inspections, as well as the deployment of bomb disposal units and canine teams at strategic positions. This alert follows a deadly car explosion near the Red Fort in November 2025, which resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people and injuries to more than 20 others.
