The incident was reported by the National Center for Seismology (NCS), which indicated that the quake occurred at a depth of 140 kilometres. The NCS provided details via a post on X, citing the specific coordinates and other relevant data associated with the tremor.

The earthquake’s details included its location latitude of 36.545 N and longitude of 71.409 E. As per the NCS’s records, this seismic event was documented at precisely 9:30:03 IST. Afghanistan’s geographical area is known for its seismic activity, especially given its positioning along significant tectonic boundaries.

Previous Earthquake Events

This latest earthquake follows another seismic event that occurred just days prior. On April 12, 2026, Afghanistan experienced a similar quake of magnitude 4.6, which struck at a depth of 150 kilometres. According to the NCS, this previous quake was registered at 5:29:04 IST, and it too was located in the Afghan region, specifically at coordinates 36.833 N and 71.447 E.

Furthermore, on April 6, 2026, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs announced its provision of humanitarian aid to Afghanistan, which has faced various natural disasters including floods and earthquakes. The assistance included essential items such as kitchen sets, hygiene kits, and sleeping materials, aimed at supporting those affected by recent calamities.
