Dropped from T20 World Cup, BCCI to Honor Shubman Gill as Cricketer of the Year

The CSR Journal Magazine

Shubman Gill is poised to receive the prestigious Cricketer of the Year award at the annual Naman awards organized by the Board of Control for Cricket in India. This recognition comes despite his exclusion from India’s squad for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup title defense last month. The announcement is expected to be made on March 15, as confirmed by official sources.

Impressive Performance in Test and ODI Formats

Throughout the past year, Gill demonstrated remarkable prowess in Test cricket, accumulating a total of 983 runs. A significant portion of these runs was scored during India’s drawn series against England, where he made an impressive 754 runs at an average exceeding 70. In the One Day International (ODI) format, Gill had a solid year, scoring 490 runs, which included 188 runs during India’s victorious campaign in the ICC Champions Trophy. Overall, he amassed 1,764 runs across formats at an average of 49, which includes seven centuries and three half-centuries.

Challenges Faced in T20 Cricket

Despite his achievements in the longer formats of the game, Gill faced challenges in securing a spot in India’s T20 setup. His return to the T20 side during the Asia Cup disrupted the existing opening combination of Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma, shifting Samson to a middle-order role despite his recent performances. Gill was given the vice-captaincy and was expected to lead the batting order. However, this strategic change led to fewer opportunities for other players like Rinku Singh, causing adjustments in the team’s dynamics.

Inconsistent Performance and Subsequent Exclusion

Gill’s tenure in the T20 squad spanned 15 matches; however, he struggled to secure a consistent place, registering only 291 runs at an average of 24.25 and a strike rate of 137.26. His difficulties continued into a series against South Africa, where he managed just 32 runs over three matches. Consequently, he was left out of the final T20I of the year held in Ahmedabad.

Success of the Team Despite Individual Challenges

Despite these challenges for Gill, the strategic changes benefitted the Indian team. Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan emerged as the top two run-scorers during the T20 World Cup, contributing significantly to India’s achievement of becoming the first nation to defend the title successfully in this format.

Looking Ahead: The IPL Season

As Shubman Gill prepares to re-enter the T20 arena, he is set to lead the Gujarat Titans in the upcoming Indian Premier League 2026 season. His first match will be against the Punjab Kings on March 31, providing him a critical opportunity to re-establish his credentials in T20 cricket after a challenging year.
