Former Cricketer Mohammad Kaif Calls for Clarity Regarding Shami’s Omission from Squad

The CSR Journal Magazine

The ongoing exclusion of Mohammed Shami from India’s cricket squad has prompted former cricketer Mohammad Kaif to demand more transparency from the selectors. Following the announcement of the team for the upcoming series in New Zealand, which consists of two Tests, five ODIs, and five T20Is, Shami’s absence has attracted criticism. Kaif highlighted the pacer’s significant contributions to the national team, particularly during the recent ODI World Cup.

Kaif emphasised that the selectors owe Shami an explanation, given his pivotal role in helping India reach the World Cup final. Shami finished the tournament as the leading wicket-taker, securing 24 wickets in seven matches. Kaif stated, “No questions are asked, no BCCI selector explains the decisions, there’s no accountability.” He called for greater transparency in the selection process, particularly regarding a player of Shami’s calibre.

Kaif also noted that Shami’s performance in domestic cricket should warrant consideration. He pointed out that the fast bowler has been taking wickets consistently, further solidifying his case for inclusion in the national squad. “Shami took 22-23 wickets in Indian conditions. So, I feel there has to be some transparency regarding why the decision has been taken,” he remarked.

Concerns Over Fitness and Selection Criteria

Shami last played for India in March 2025 during the Champions Trophy and made his most recent Test appearance in the World Test Championship final against Australia in June 2023. Since then, he has been striving to reclaim his position through domestic performances after a prolonged absence from the longest format of the game. Reports suggest that concerns about his match fitness have influenced the selectors’ decision to exclude him from the Test squad.

Selectors have reportedly raised questions about Shami’s ability to endure the rigours of red-ball cricket, especially since he has been bowling shorter spells in domestic matches. Kaif challenged whether this should be a determining factor for his omission, citing the workload management strategies employed for other players, such as Jasprit Bumrah. He stated, “I heard that he’s (Shami) bowling short spells and so not being picked. Jasprit Bumrah also bowls four-over spells in Test cricket.”

Kaif further argued that if workload management is acceptable for one bowler, it should be applicable to others as well. He expressed hope that the selectors would clarify their stance on Shami’s fitness and selection criteria, stating, “There’s nothing wrong in bowling short spells if you can get the job done. So, transparency remains a grey area which I hope should be addressed soon.”

Impact on Shami’s Future and Team Dynamics

The debate surrounding Shami’s selection has intensified following the recent squad announcement. The fast bowler was also rested from Bengal’s second-round match in the ongoing Ranji Trophy season, which has added to the uncertainty regarding his immediate return to competitive cricket. As India prepares for the New Zealand series, Kaif’s comments have reignited discussions about the selectors’ evaluation of Shami’s fitness and readiness.

With Shami being one of the most experienced fast bowlers in the country, the need for clarity in the selection process has become increasingly pressing. The selectors face scrutiny not only for their decisions but also for their communication regarding those choices. Kaif’s remarks have underscored the importance of transparency in fostering trust between players and the selection committee.

As the cricketing community awaits further developments, the focus remains on how the selectors will address the ongoing concerns regarding Shami’s fitness and his potential role in future matches. The situation continues to evolve, with implications for both Shami’s career and the Indian cricket team’s strategy moving forward.
