Parvinder Awana Appointed Chairperson of Junior Selection Committee

The CSR Journal Magazine

Parvinder Awana has been appointed as the chairperson of the junior selection committee, as announced by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Friday. This decision follows the completion of the selection process by the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC). Awana, who has represented India in two T20 Internationals, will lead a committee that includes Krishna Das, Rakesh Patel, and N. Arjun Yadav. The identity of the fifth member is expected to be revealed shortly.

Background of Parvinder Awana

Awana’s cricketing career includes two T20I appearances for India in 2012. In addition to his international experience, he has played 62 First-Class matches, where he took 191 wickets. He is also known for his participation in the Indian Premier League, having played for the Kings XI Punjab, which has since been rebranded as Punjab Kings. Following his retirement from professional cricket, Awana transitioned into coaching, where he has worked with various age-group teams in Delhi, including U16, U19, and U23 teams. He has also contributed to the India U19 team and participated in several high-performance programmes organised by the BCCI and the Centre of Excellence (COE).

His extensive experience in coaching positions him well to guide the junior selection committee. Awana’s familiarity with the developmental stages of cricket in India will be an asset as he oversees the selection of young talent for the national setup.

Profiles of Other Committee Members

The junior selection committee also includes Krishna Das, who has represented Assam and Goa in domestic cricket. Das has played 49 First-Class matches, claiming 166 wickets throughout his career. He has previously been involved with the India U19 team as a bowling coach and has also served as the bowling coach for the Uttarakhand Ranji Trophy team. His experience in nurturing young talent will complement Awana’s leadership.

Rakesh Patel is another member of the committee, having played for Gujarat and Baroda while also representing India A. His domestic cricket experience includes participation in prestigious tournaments like the Duleep Trophy, Deodhar Trophy, and Irani Cup. Following his playing career, Patel transitioned into coaching, where he has worked with Baroda and Gujarat across various age groups, including U19 and U23 teams. He was notably the head coach of the Baroda U23 team during the 2025-26 season.

N. Arjun Yadav, the final confirmed member of the committee, has a notable cricketing background as well. He represented India A and played 83 First-Class matches, contributing significantly to his teams. Yadav was part of India’s U19 World Cup-winning squad in 2000. After his playing career with Hyderabad, he took on coaching roles, serving as the head coach for both Hyderabad’s senior and U23 teams. His experience will further enrich the committee’s capabilities in selecting promising players.

Recent Developments in Selection Committees

This announcement comes shortly after Pragyan Ojha was confirmed as the chairperson of the senior selection committee. Ramesh Powar was also named as the fifth member of that panel. Earlier this month, Ajit Agarkar’s tenure as chief selector concluded, prompting the restructuring of both senior and junior selection committees. The BCCI’s efforts to enhance the selection process reflect its commitment to developing cricket at all levels in India.

The formation of the junior selection committee under Awana’s leadership is expected to play a crucial role in identifying and nurturing future cricketing talent in the country. As the BCCI continues to focus on grassroots development, the committee’s work will be pivotal in shaping the next generation of cricketers.
