The CSR Journal Magazine

Parvinder Awana has been appointed as the chairman of the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) Junior Selection Committee, as announced on Friday, October 23. This decision follows a recommendation from the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), which includes Ashok Malhotra and Jatin Paranjape. The appointment came after a thorough interview process conducted by the CAC.

Committee Composition and Future Plans

Alongside Awana, the committee will also include members Krishna Das, Rakesh Patel, and N. Arjun Yadav. The BCCI has indicated that a fifth member will be appointed in the near future. The CAC stated that they screened and interviewed various applicants before finalising the appointments, ensuring a comprehensive selection process.

Awana has a notable cricketing background, having represented India in two T20 Internationals and accumulated 191 wickets across 62 First-Class matches. His domestic career included playing for Delhi and representing India A and Rest of India. Additionally, he was part of the Kings XI Punjab, now known as Punjab Kings, in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Following his retirement from playing, Awana transitioned into coaching, contributing to Delhi’s Under-16, Under-19, and Under-23 teams.

His coaching experience extends to the India Under-19 set-up and the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (COE) high-performance programmes, equipping him with the skills necessary for his new role.

Experience of Other Committee Members

Krishna Das, another member of the committee, is a former fast bowler who played for Assam and Goa. He took 166 wickets in 49 First-Class matches and has also represented India Under-19 and India A. Das has transitioned into coaching, having held positions with the India Under-19 team and Uttarakhand’s Ranji Trophy side, bringing valuable experience to the committee.

Rakesh Patel has a rich history in domestic cricket, having played for Gujarat and Baroda, as well as representing India A. His career includes participation in prestigious tournaments such as the Duleep Trophy, Deodhar Trophy, and Irani Trophy. Patel has also been involved in coaching at various levels, including Under-19, Under-23, and senior teams for Gujarat and Baroda. He notably led Baroda’s Under-23 team during the 2025-26 season.

N. Arjun Yadav, the final confirmed member, has played 83 First-Class matches and was part of India’s Under-19 World Cup-winning squad in 2000. He later played for Hyderabad and has coached both the state’s senior and Under-23 teams. In 2022, he took on the role of a BCCI match referee, adding to his extensive cricketing experience.

Committee’s Responsibilities Ahead

The newly formed committee is tasked with overseeing selections for India’s junior cricket teams. With the appointment of the fifth member still pending, the committee is expected to begin its work promptly, focusing on identifying and nurturing young talent within the sport. The BCCI aims to strengthen the foundation of Indian cricket through this committee’s efforts.

As the cricketing landscape continues to evolve, the BCCI’s Junior Selection Committee will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of cricket in India, ensuring that emerging players receive the guidance and opportunities necessary to excel at higher levels.
