Drone Strike Damages Vessel in Bulgaria’s Black Sea Economic Zone

The CSR Journal Magazine

The recent drone strike that targeted two commercial vessels has been reported as the first of its kind in Bulgaria’s exclusive economic zone in the Black Sea. This incident occurred early on Tuesday, with Prime Minister Rumen Radev confirming the nature of the attack. Authorities are currently investigating the origins of the drones involved in the incident.

Prime Minister Radev convened an emergency government meeting following the strike, emphasising that this assault represents a serious breach of both international and maritime laws. The attack was said to have taken place at approximately 3 a.m., around 80 miles, or 128 kilometres, off Bulgaria’s coastline.

Details of the Casualties and Damage

The vessel identified as Alfa Watan, flying the Togo flag, was reportedly gravely damaged and has since sunk. As of now, there are no updates on the status of its crew members. The second vessel, the Able, registered in Palau, subsequently caught fire due to the same attack. Bulgarian authorities facilitated the evacuation of the crew, consisting of 18 sailors, with two individuals suffering serious injuries being airlifted to a medical facility in Varna.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy asserted that Ukrainian military operations had not occurred in proximity to where the attack unfolded. He placed blame on Russian forces for this incident. Zelenskyy described the attack on civilian vessels as part of ongoing efforts by Russia to render the western Black Sea unsafe for navigation.

The Ukrainian Navy allegedly corroborated this information with their Bulgarian counterparts, asserting it was a coordinated Russian attack involving both maritime and aerial drones. Russian officials have not yet responded to these accusations.

Implications for Maritime Security

The attack has raised significant concerns regarding maritime safety in the region. Following the incident, Bulgarian President Iliana Yotova has announced an emergency meeting of the country’s Security Council scheduled for Wednesday afternoon. This gathering aims to address pressing risks and threats concerning Bulgaria’s maritime security, particularly in light of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Prime Minister Radev provided additional context, stating that the Able was transporting wheat and was on a southward course, while the cargo of Alfa Watan remains unreported. Authorities are currently vigilant regarding possible oil spills and other environmental hazards stemming from the incident.

Radev underscored the government’s responsibility for maintaining safety within their economic zone, regardless of accountability for the attack. He indicated that emergency search and rescue operations are underway in response to the situation.

Broader Context and Recent Developments

This recent strike has been described as a significant disruption to maritime activity in the Black Sea, leading to heightened insurance costs and complicating shipping operations. The Prime Minister warned that the ongoing conflict is expanding geographically, presenting a greater risk of broader hostilities.

The attack comes shortly after a Turkish-owned cargo ship, which was transporting corn, caught fire and subsequently sank following a drone strike. Romanian authorities confirmed the fatalities of two individuals while stating that 11 crew members were successfully rescued.

In light of these developments, NATO’s leadership has urged member states to identify those responsible for drone incidents or sabotage once sufficient evidence emerges. These events collectively highlight the escalating security risks associated with shipping routes and overall safety in the Black Sea region.
