Indian Embassy in Romania Assists Three Nationals Rescued from Black Sea Vessel Following Drone Attack

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Indian Embassy in Romania has taken steps to assist three Indian nationals who were rescued from the MV ROYAD MAMMADOV in the Black Sea after a drone attack. Reports indicate that the incident occurred recently, resulting in the vessel being targeted and leading to injuries among the crew members.

An official communication from the embassy confirmed that a representative visited the rescued individuals on October 6. Currently, two of the survivors are located in a hotel, while the third is receiving medical treatment at the County Hospital in Constanța. All three individuals are reported to be in stable condition, and the Embassy is providing necessary assistance for their safe departure from Romania.

In addition to medical support, essential items such as mobile phones were arranged through the local agent of the shipping company. The embassy also coordinated with a local Indian restaurant to provide familiar food to the affected nationals, ensuring their comfort during this challenging time.

Condemnation of Attack and Diplomatic Actions

The Indian government expressed its condemnation of the drone attack on the MV ROYAD MAMMADOV, in which two foreign seafarers lost their lives and several crew members sustained injuries, including the three Indian nationals. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated that the injured crew members were rescued by Romanian authorities and are currently under medical care.

In its official statement, the MEA extended gratitude to Romanian authorities for their prompt response after the attack, emphasising their role in ensuring the safety of those involved. Furthermore, the Indian government reiterated its calls for dialogue and diplomatic measures to resolve ongoing international conflicts that threaten maritime safety.

The MEA underscored its strong stance against attacks on commercial shipping, asserting that such incidents pose significant risks to global commerce and endanger the welfare of communities worldwide. The Ministry highlighted the need for collective efforts to safeguard international shipping routes.

Engagement with Local Authorities and Ongoing Support

To facilitate a comprehensive response to the situation, the Indian Ambassador to Romania, Manoj Mohapatra, communicated with the three nationals receiving care at Constanța County Hospital. The Ambassador also had discussions with the hospital’s Chief Physician, who confirmed that the individuals are in good health and receiving appropriate medical assistance.

The embassy indicated that it is maintaining close contact with Romanian authorities to gather further information regarding the attack and the well-being of the Indian crew members. This engagement ensures that the embassy can provide immediate support and resources as needed.

Additionally, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar previously addressed the issue of maritime security at the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. He voiced concerns about the threats facing commercial vessels and the importance of maintaining peace in international waters to protect civilian crews and foster uninterrupted global trade.

India is actively engaged in international initiatives to enhance the safety of shipping and seafarers. It recently participated in establishing the “”Group of Friends on Safety and Security of Shipping and Seafarers,”” aimed at safeguarding maritime operations against targeted attacks. This coalition reflects India’s commitment to improving maritime security and addressing risks in international shipping.
