23 Indian Seafarers Safely Evacuated After Ukrainian Drone Attack on Oil Tanker

The CSR Journal Magazine

The safety of 23 Indian crew members has been assured following a drone strike on their Liberian-registered oil tanker, which took place near the Russian Black Sea coastline. The attack reportedly involved naval drones, as mentioned by the Russian Transport Ministry. Subsequently, crude oil ignited, resulting in a significant fire aboard the vessel.

Emergency responders faced challenges in extinguishing the flames, which were initially too intense to manage effectively. The Russian ministry stated that firefighting efforts would commence once the situation was deemed safe for intervention. Fortunately, all crew members were successfully evacuated shortly after the attack.

The incident occurred in proximity to Sochi, a celebrated resort city along the Black Sea, home to roughly 500,000 residents. Eyewitness videos circulating on social media depicted vivid orange flames flaring above the water, accompanied by thick black smoke billowing into the sky.

Related Maritime Incidents and International Reactions

This strike on the oil tanker follows another maritime disaster involving the commercial vessel MV ROYAD MAMMADOV, which sank off the Romanian coast the previous day. The incident resulted in two fatalities among foreign nationals and injuries to crew members, including three Indian citizens. As a response, India condemned the escalating violence and reiterated its commitment to dialogue and diplomatic solutions to ongoing crises.

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed that the injured crew members from the MV ROYAD MAMMADOV were rescued by Romanian authorities and are currently receiving medical treatment. India expressed gratitude to Romania for its prompt assistance. The Indian Ambassador to Romania, Manoj Mohapatra, visited the three Indian nationals at Constanța County Hospital to ensure they received adequate support.

The MEA has expressed grave concerns over persistent threats to commercial shipping, highlighting the dangerous implications of such attacks for global trade and public welfare. The ministry underscored India’s involvement in establishing the “Group of Friends on Safety and Security of Shipping and Seafarers” at the United Nations, signalling its dedication to maritime safety.

Escalating Threats to Maritime Operations

Since the beginning of the Russia-Ukraine conflict in 2022, maritime traffic in the Black Sea has faced increasingly frequent assaults. Both nations have targeted naval vessels and related infrastructure in their ongoing confrontations. Recent days saw attacks by Moscow on grain carriers transporting Ukrainian agricultural goods near Romania.

In response, Ukraine has asserted that its offensive actions against Russian oil infrastructure are justifiable acts of retaliation against continual aerial bombardments on Ukrainian cities. Both parties have indicated their intent to escalate military operations, raising alarms about the security of commercial vessels operating in the Black Sea.

Moreover, Moscow has intensified attacks on essential bridges in Kyiv and unveiled new drone assault strategies aimed at the capital during daylight hours. This shift in tactics has led to notable disruptions and traffic issues within the city. The recent fire on the tanker underscores the ongoing dangers faced by commercial shipping amid the persistent hostilities in the region.
