Diljit Dosanjh Opens Up About Early Struggles and Journey to Stardom

The CSR Journal Magazine

Diljit Dosanjh has recounted the adversities he faced before achieving stardom, particularly in his early years. The singer and actor revealed that his family often struggled to afford basic healthcare. His childhood experiences of financial hardship greatly influenced his determination to succeed. During an interview on the programme Q with Tom Power, he discussed how these early challenges shaped his perspective on life and his relentless work ethic.

He recalled that, at times, his family was so financially constrained that falling ill was not manageable, emphasising that such a state was a luxury they could not afford. This reality propelled him to seek every possible opportunity to secure financial stability.

Finding Financial Stability Through Performances

After releasing his debut album in 2002, Diljit Dosanjh recognised that live performances would be crucial for his income. Initially reluctant to perform at social gatherings such as birthday parties and weddings, he soon realised the significant financial benefits they presented. He stated, “It’s amazing. There’s so much money in that field.”

As his debut album gained traction, Diljit started receiving requests for performances at such events. Although his initial reluctance stemmed from a desire to focus on traditional music industry avenues, he soon accepted these opportunities due to contractual obligations. This decision proved advantageous, as he discovered that solely relying on album sales was insufficient for financial security.

His willingness to perform anywhere, at any time, was informed by his need to overcome the economic hardships of his youth. He recalled, “I didn’t say no to anybody. If someone offered Rs 5,000, Rs 10,000, Rs 15,000, I said yes. I went everywhere day and night.” This approach to securing gigs greatly contributed to his gradual rise in the industry.

Transitioning Towards Solo Concerts

Diljit Dosanjh also addressed the reason for his eventual withdrawal from wedding performances. According to him, some established figures in the Punjabi music scene looked down on artists participating in such events, leading to a perception that he was confined to that niche. Instead of allowing these opinions to dictate his career path, he made the decision to focus on staging his own concerts.

Reflecting on his upbringing, Diljit stated, “Because I came from a poor family. It was like a below-average family. If you got sick, you wouldn’t have money to go to the doctor, so don’t get sick because you don’t have money.” This perspective underscored the drive behind his career choices and his efforts to alter the trajectory of his life.

On the professional front, Diljit was recently featured in Imtiaz Ali’s film Main Vaapas Aaunga, released on June 12. The film, which also stars Naseeruddin Shah, Vedang Raina, and Sharvari, marked another milestone in his evolving career. As he continues to navigate the entertainment landscape, he remains focused on achieving greater heights while embracing his roots.
