Delhi Police Detain Priyanka Gandhi and Congress MPs During Anti-CEC Protest

The CSR Journal Magazine

On October 7, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was seen lying on the ground as Delhi Police detained numerous MPs from the INDIA bloc while en route to Jantar Mantar. The gathering was part of a protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, with accusations of irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision exercise. According to reports, Priyanka Gandhi stated her intention to remain on the ground, alleging mistreatment by the police as they attempted to forcefully remove her.

Priyanka Gandhi claimed, “This is how they treat MPs who simply want to meet the Election Commission. This is how they beat up MPs. Women police personnel have scratched me all over and thrown us to the ground. Let them call their forces back.” This assertion highlighted the tensions between the protesting MPs and the law enforcement present at the site.

Rahul Gandhi and Other MPs Detained Amid Tensions

Delhi Police also detained Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi during this incident. As opposition MPs sought to advance towards their destination, they faced strong resistance from law enforcement. Congress MP Charanjit Singh Channi condemned the actions of the Central Government, labelling it as “hooliganism.”

Channi expressed his discontent, stating, “We want to go towards the ECI office; this government has resorted to hooliganism. There is no democracy. We are being stopped.” This statement underscores the opposition’s frustration with what they perceive as a denial of their democratic rights.

Congress MP Pawan Khera further emphasised the need for peaceful assembly, arguing that the right to protest at Jantar Mantar is enshrined in Article 19 of the Indian Constitution. He asserted, “We are fighting for our rights—fighting for the rights of the country’s voters—and yet every time, we are being stopped in this struggle.” Khera’s remarks reflect concerns over the limitations placed on MPs during protests.

Security Measures and Ongoing Agitation

Extensive security measures were deployed in the area surrounding Jantar Mantar as the INDIA bloc MPs aimed to gather for their protest against the Chief Election Commissioner. This heightened security indicates the authorities’ anticipation of potential disturbances as the opposition sought to voice their grievances.

Prior to the protest at Jantar Mantar, opposition MPs held a meeting earlier in the day convened by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, aiming to discuss concerns regarding the conduct of the Chief Election Commissioner. This meeting marks a continuation of the INDIA bloc’s efforts to address what they consider significant electoral issues.

On the preceding day, these leaders had also participated in a protest march and dharna at Akashvani Bhawan, signalling an escalation in their agitation efforts. The opposition has been actively coordinating protests aimed at bringing light to their concerns surrounding the electoral process in India.
