The INDIA bloc is set to hold a public impeachment of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar at the official residence of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge in New Delhi on October 30. The event will commence at 3.30 pm and will be chaired by former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar. This gathering aims to address concerns regarding the electoral process and the role of the Chief Election Commissioner.

Leaders from the INDIA bloc, along with members of civil society and individuals affected by the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process, will deliver speeches during the event. Kharge, who also serves as the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, is expected to move the motion for impeachment. Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, will provide the concluding remarks, emphasising the bloc’s stance on the alleged electoral issues.

The opposition coalition had initially planned to host the event at Ashok Hotel and Ramlila Maidan, but faced challenges in obtaining the necessary permissions. Congress general secretary in charge of communications, Jairam Ramesh, announced the new venue, 10 Rajaji Marg, as a result of these complications.

Ramesh has publicly accused Gyanesh Kumar of breaching constitutional principles and compromising electoral integrity. In a post on X, he stated that the Chief Election Commissioner has systematically undermined the foundations of electoral democracy and has allegedly misled the Supreme Court.

Government Response And Allegations

The Congress party has previously claimed that Ashok Hotel initially approved the event but later rescinded the permission following police intervention. Subsequently, the party attempted to relocate the event to Ramlila Maidan, only to find that the venue was booked from October 25 to November 3. KC Venugopal, Congress general secretary (organisation), alleged that police had obstructed party workers from setting up infrastructure at the alternative venue.

Venugopal accused the government of attempting to suppress dissent and suggested that authorities were protecting Gyanesh Kumar from scrutiny. He asserted that the opposition would persist in its protests despite facing these obstacles, indicating a commitment to raising concerns about electoral fairness.

The public impeachment event is part of a larger campaign by the Congress and other opposition parties, which seeks the resignation of Gyanesh Kumar over issues related to the SIR process and alleged electoral discrepancies.
