Delhi High Court Rejects Celina Jaitly Petition Over Brother’s Detention in UAE

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Delhi High Court has formally dismissed a petition lodged by former actress Celina Jaitly, who sought consular access to visit her brother, Vikrant Jaitly. Currently detained in the United Arab Emirates, Vikrant had expressed a desire to refrain from communication with Celina and requested that any legal decisions be made following consultation with his spouse. This decision was announced following discussions held on March 16 before Justice Purushaindra Kumar Kaurav.

During the court session, it was revealed that Vikrant had previously been granted consular access but opted not to accept legal assistance. Celina’s petition included a request for the government to aid in the arrangement of legal fees for her brother. The court acknowledged that this matter had been brought to Vikrant’s attention.

Legal Assistance Request and Response

Celina Jaitly sought the court’s intervention to secure legal representation for her brother. However, the court noted that Vikrant had clearly expressed his unwillingness to engage with any law firm, including a pro bono offer from Khalid Almari law firm. The court mandated that the authorities inform Vikrant about this offer, but he still declined to accept it.

In addition to the legal assistance, Celina also asked for direct communication to be established between her and Vikrant. However, he similarly refused this proposal, maintaining his preference for limited communication.

Family’s Concerns and Court’s Conclusion

During the hearings, Vikrant’s wife requested the court to ensure that further details about the ongoing case should not be publicly disclosed. The court acknowledged the family’s concerns and noted that state authorities would continue their assistance in collaboration with Vikrant.

In concluding the proceedings, the court instructed that the authorities keep in contact with Vikrant and provide any legal aid permitted by the law. The court emphasized that, based on the latest developments, there was no justification to keep Celina’s petition open. Reports indicate that Vikrant Jaitly has been in detention in the UAE since September 6, 2024.
