The flood situation in India’s Northeast remains severe as continuous rainfall wreaks havoc across multiple states. Over the past few days, floods and landslides triggered by the downpour have claimed 36 lives and affected more than 5.5 lakh people across the region.
Assam: Worst-Hit State
Assam has emerged as the worst-affected state, with 11 reported deaths and over 5.35 lakh people impacted across 22 districts. Major rivers including the Brahmaputra, Barak, and Subansiri are flowing above danger levels at several points.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA):
• Sribhumi, Cachar, and Nagaon are among the worst-hit districts.
• Over 31,000 people have taken shelter in 165 relief camps.
• Crops spanning 12,610 hectares have been destroyed.
• 94 animals were reported dead in the past 24 hours.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma blamed the sudden release of water from NEEPCO’s Ranganadi Dam in Arunachal Pradesh for intensifying the flood situation. “If NEEPCO reserves a large quantity of water and then releases it together, it becomes a kind of ‘water bomb’,” he stated. He assured residents of temporary and post-monsoon embankment restoration efforts.
The deluge has also disrupted key transportation services:
• Ferry services between Majuli and Jorhat remain suspended.
• Train services from Silchar have been cancelled due to waterlogging.
Arunachal Pradesh: Landslides and Rising Waters
In Arunachal Pradesh, the death toll has risen to 10, with a recent fatality reported from Lohit district. Floods and landslides have affected over 900 people across 23 districts. Rivers remain in spate in several areas including:
• West Kameng
• Dibang Valley
• Papum Pare
Governor Lt General K T Parnaik (Retd) extended his condolences and advised residents to remain vigilant in high-risk zones.
Sikkim: Landslide Claims Lives in Military Camp

• Havaldar Lakhwinder Singh
