Days after Baruipur, Bengal sees second ‘rape’ of minor in Malda, neighbour arrested

A 30-year-old man has been arrested by police in connection with the alleged rape of a minor girl in West Bengal’s Malda district. The accused, identified as Sheikh Rabiul, was taken into custody after police launched an investigation following a complaint filed by the victim’s family.

According to police officials, the accused allegedly lured the minor girl away from her home before committing the crime. The incident reportedly occurred on July 5 within the jurisdiction of the English Bazar police station area.

Victim Undergoing Medical Treatment

Following the incident, the minor girl was taken for medical examination and treatment. She is currently receiving care at the Malda Medical College and Hospital, where authorities are monitoring her condition.

Police officials stated that medical procedures and other investigations are being carried out as part of the legal process. The authorities are collecting evidence and examining all aspects related to the case.

Family Complaint Leads to Police Action

The case came to light after the girl’s family approached the police and submitted a written complaint. Acting on the complaint, authorities registered a case and immediately started an investigation.

Police officials said a special investigation team was formed soon after receiving the complaint. The team was assigned to conduct a detailed probe and trace the accused.

Accused Held While Allegedly Attempting to Flee

During the investigation, police gathered information about the accused’s movements and tracked his location. Sheikh Rabiul was arrested in the early hours of Monday while he was allegedly trying to escape to Purnia in neighbouring Bihar.

Officials said the accused was detained before he could leave the area. The arrest was carried out based on leads developed during the investigation.

Court Sends Accused to Police Custody

After his arrest, Sheikh Rabiul was produced before a district court in Malda on Monday. The court granted seven days of police custody, allowing investigators to question the accused further and collect additional evidence.

Police said the custody period will help them examine the circumstances surrounding the case and complete the investigation process.

POCSO Act Invoked, Probe Continues

Malda Additional Superintendent of Police Maksud Hasan confirmed that a case has been registered under relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

He said police acted quickly after receiving the complaint and formed a dedicated team to investigate the allegations. According to Hasan, the accused was traced and arrested while allegedly attempting to avoid arrest.

Authorities Focus on Evidence Collection

Police officials have stated that the investigation is still underway and that every aspect of the case is being examined. Evidence collection, statements, and other legal procedures are being carried out according to established guidelines.
