CSR Funding Boosts Morgue Infrastructure in Vadodara

The CSR Journal Magazine

Vadodara’s public health system has seen important improvements thanks to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) contributions. The city’s main hospitals, including the state-run Sir Sayajirao General (SSG) Hospital and the GMERS Medical College and Hospital in Gotri, faced serious challenges in handling unclaimed and unattended bodies. In the past, overcrowded mortuaries and bodies stored in open spaces upset grieving families and caused public concern.

A year ago, SSG Hospital struggled to store the rising number of bodies. The hospital had limited cold storage space which led to poor hygiene and put pressure on hospital staff. Reports revealed that two or more bodies sometimes shared the same mortuary cabinet, highlighting the severity of the crisis.

This changed after corporate groups provided funding through CSR schemes. The LIC Golden Jubilee Fund helped SSG Hospital buy new mortuary cabinets. This increased cold storage capacity significantly. Dr Ranjan Aiyer, the hospital’s medical superintendent, said the cold room now holds six cabinets, each with six units. This means the hospital can safely store 36 bodies at once. There is a plan, already in advanced approval stages, to double this number soon using additional CSR funds.

At the same time, GMERS Medical College and Hospital opened a new post-mortem facility. This development has reduced the burden on SSG Hospital and improved public health infrastructure in Vadodara. It also ensures greater dignity for the deceased.

The Gujarat government directed all major public hospitals in Vadodara to double their morgue capacity. This step aims to prepare the health system for future needs. The cooperation between the government and private companies has been a noteworthy success story.

Across Gujarat, many cities have benefited from increased CSR funding. In 2020-21, Vadodara received nearly Rs 78 crore from over 200 companies. Much of this money went towards health and hygiene projects. Experts believe combining CSR funds with government efforts leads to lasting improvements in healthcare services.

By supplementing limited government budgets, CSR funding has brought vital changes to Vadodara’s morgue facilities. This joint approach encourages more corporate involvement in public welfare. As a result, citizens gain access to better healthcare services and dignity even in death.
