The Samajwadi Party (SP) has officially commenced its booth-level campaign in Uttar Pradesh, focusing on the upcoming Assembly elections scheduled for 2027. Party leader Akhilesh Yadav made this announcement during a press conference in Lucknow, following a meeting with key organisational figures in the party. He has positioned the SP against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), denouncing it as the most corrupt government in the state’s history.

The campaign aims to mobilise party district presidents and executive committee members to publicly draw attention to alleged corruption and the marginalisation of backward classes, Dalits, and minorities. The SP is specifically targeting the PDA (Progressive Democratic Alliance) bloc, which has been identified as crucial for their electoral strategy in the forthcoming elections.

Strategic Goals Ahead of Lok Sabha Elections

In the 2022 Assembly elections, the Samajwadi Party secured 111 seats, establishing itself as a significant political force. Looking ahead to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the SP aims to build on its momentum, having emerged as the largest party in Uttar Pradesh with 37 seats. The party’s goal is to transform this electoral success into a significant victory in the upcoming Assembly polls, with the intention to end the BJP’s decade-long governance in the state.

Akhilesh Yadav has vociferously targeted Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath regarding the management of the Jayaprakash Narayan International Centre (JPNIC). Allegations include claims that the BJP government has been “selling” government properties, a response to Adityanath’s accusations of corruption against Yadav and his family concerning the same centre. Yadav contends that the government has never seen integrity as low as it currently finds itself.

Furthermore, Yadav has highlighted alleged closures of around 26,000 government schools and announced plans for the SP to hold programmes at these institutions on Teachers’ Day, celebrated on September 5. He believes the administrative handling of government institutions has contributed to declining educational standards and has attracted dissatisfaction from various sectors.

Allegations of Manipulation and Misinformation

As part of the campaign initiatives, Yadav has also raised concerns regarding the proposed revision of electoral rolls. He has accused the BJP government of collaborating with the Election Commission to manipulate voter data, suggesting systematic attempts to influence the democratic process in Uttar Pradesh.

Moreover, Yadav has described the Special Task Force of the Uttar Pradesh Police as a “caste-based torture force” and stated that the agency continues to harass members of PDA communities. He has promised that should the SP come to power, there would be investigations into alleged fake encounters conducted by these units.

Additionally, the SP chief has alleged that artificial intelligence-generated videos have been created to discredit him and his wife, Dimple Yadav, who serves as the MP for Mainpuri. He expressed assurance that a government representing the PDA coalition would be formed in Uttar Pradesh after the 2027 elections. The engagement in these political narratives reflects the ongoing tensions and the highly competitive nature of Uttar Pradesh’s political landscape.
