Crisis Deepens for Trinamool Congress as Rebellion Threatens Lok Sabha Leadership

The CSR Journal Magazine

The political crisis engulfing the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has intensified, with reports indicating a looming no-confidence motion against Abhishek Banerjee’s leadership in the Lok Sabha.

Once considered the undisputed second-in-command, Banerjee now finds himself increasingly isolated within his own party. Sources within the TMC suggest that a formal expression of no confidence regarding his parliamentary leadership is now only a matter of time. Several MPs are reportedly breaking ranks and avoiding communication with the party’s top brass.

Rebellion Spreads from Assembly to Parliament

This parliamentary turmoil follows a massive fracture in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly. Recently, Ritabrata Banerjee secured the position of Leader of the Opposition with the backing of 58 MLAs, immediately launching scathing political attacks against Abhishek Banerjee, the MP from Diamond Harbour.

Speculation is now rife about who will lead the rebellion in the Lower House of Parliament. Insiders point toward rebel MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar as a key figure to watch. The discontent has also breached the Rajya Sabha, where veteran leader Sukhendu Sekhar Roy has openly voiced his dissent.

The depth of the crisis was on full display during a recent sit-in demonstration led by party supremo Mamata Banerjee, which saw a dismal turnout of only six MPs. While Abhishek Banerjee’s absence was expected, the non-attendance of numerous other lawmakers has fueled intense speculation about further defections.

Internal Rifts and Celebrity Distancing

Adding to the leadership’s woes, “celebrity” MPs are reportedly distancing themselves from active party affairs. Meanwhile, the ongoing feud between senior leaders Kalyan Banerjee and Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar has escalated dramatically. Dastidar has leveled serious allegations against Chief Whip Kalyan Banerjee, taking the matter directly to the Lok Sabha Speaker. Observers are now watching closely to see if other MPs will back Dastidar’s stance, further fracturing the party’s parliamentary unit.

Central Government Steps Up Legislative Pressure

As internal chaos peaks, the central government is reportedly preparing legislative maneuvers that could solidify the split within the TMC.

Delimitation Bill: The government is planning a comprehensive overhaul of the Delimitation Bill to introduce it in Parliament.

One Nation, One Election: The “One Nation, One Election” Bill, currently under review by a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC), is also expected to be fast-tracked.

These legislative moves present a formidable challenge to the TMC’s long-term survival in national politics.

Mamata Banerjee Looks to Legal Remedy and INDIA Alliance

In response to the factional split and the looming battle over the party’s official symbol, the pro-Mamata Banerjee faction has initiated legal consultations.

Strategic Move: Sources reveal that the loyalist faction is closely monitoring the state Assembly Speaker’s actions and plans to approach the Supreme Court at an opportune moment.

Mamata Banerjee is scheduled to attend an INDIA bloc meeting in Delhi on June 8, where she is expected to hold exclusive consultations with top constitutional experts. Legal experts suggest that the recent Supreme Court rulings regarding the Shiv Sena and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leadership disputes in Maharashtra will serve as a crucial roadmap for the TMC’s legal battle ahead.
