Churachandpur District in Manipur Observes Shutdown Over Death of Vungzagin Valte

The CSR Journal Magazine

Churachandpur district in Manipur experienced a complete shutdown lasting 13 hours on April 22, 2026, in response to calls for justice following the death of BJP MLA Vungzagin Valte. The shutdown, initiated by Zomi groups and supported by Kuki civil society organisations and Hmar groups, commenced at 5 am and was set to conclude at 6 pm. During this period, all commercial and public services were brought to a standstill.

Officials reported no incidents of violence or disorder throughout the duration of the shutdown. The streets of Churachandpur, including major routes like Tipaimukh Road and Guite Road, were devoid of traffic, reflecting the widespread adherence to the shutdown call.

The Zomi Coordination Committee, which played a key role in organising the event, expressed that the primary objective was to seek justice for MLA Valte, who tragically passed away following an attack. “It has been nearly 60 days since his death, and we are yet to see any response or action from the authorities,” a representative stated.

Background of MLA Vungzagin Valte’s Death

Vungzagin Valte died on February 20, 2026, in a hospital in Gurugram after being injured during a mob attack in May 2023. His death spurred significant public concern regarding the perceived lack of effective action in holding those responsible accountable. Organisers of the shutdown believe that more must be done to address the circumstances surrounding his demise.

The Zomi Coordination Committee has previously urged the authorities to provide updates and details about the investigation surrounding the MLA’s death. They expressed disappointment in what they consider to be insufficient governmental response to their ongoing requests for justice.

On the eve of the shutdown, a candlelight vigil took place in Lamka to honour Valte’s memory. Participants at this event reiterated their call for a thorough investigation into the circumstances of his death, demonstrating a commitment to continued advocacy.

Calm Across the District During Shutdown

Authorities noted that the overall situation in Churachandpur remained calm without any violent disruptions, aside from the planned shutdown activities. Emergency services, including ambulances, were stationed at strategic locations to respond promptly should the need arise, while routine services such as pharmacies and water supply operations were temporarily suspended.

Officials confirmed that there was no deployment of police or security personnel during the shutdown, emphasising the need for a peaceful resolution to the situation while ensuring public safety. The action taken by local community groups indicates a concerted effort to highlight their demands for justice.

Community leaders have indicated that protests and demonstrations will persist until substantive action is taken by the authorities concerning the investigation into Valte’s death. The ongoing efforts from various organisations reflect a collective desire for accountability and justice that the community believes is crucial in the wake of this tragedy.
