Chandrababu Naidu Backs 33% Reservation For Women In Legislative Bodies

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, N. Chandrababu Naidu, and the President of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) have officially endorsed a proposal for a 33 per cent reservation for women in legislative bodies. During his address at Mahanadu in Vijayawada, Naidu expressed his belief that the TDP would take the lead on this initiative, even if other political parties do not reach a consensus at the national level.

Nara Lokesh Advocates for Women’s Representation

The proposal had been initially put forward by the party’s National Working President, Nara Lokesh. Naidu stated that the TDP would implement this reservation within its own ranks should there be a lack of agreement among national parties. He assured that the TDP aims to guarantee significant representation for women in the legislative assemblies of Andhra Pradesh.

In his remarks, Chandrababu Naidu referred to the historical context surrounding women’s roles in politics, expressing the belief that participation is feasible. He cited instances from his own family, where women have provided critical financial support through their careers while engaging in political and public life.

Historical Context and Challenges

Naidu elaborated on the previously proposed 33 per cent reservation for women in job opportunities and educational settings. He reflected on the scepticism he faced from various quarters when these measures were suggested. Some men had expressed concerns that increased opportunities for women would disadvantage them under merit-based criteria.

In response to these apprehensions, he acknowledged the historical disparities that warranted corrective measures. He reiterated that progress should be aimed at addressing such inequalities, and highlighted the transformative potential of women’s empowerment in societal development.

Naidu’s comments were also reflective of a broader sentiment within politics, as recent parliamentary discussions surrounding the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill had failed to secure a two-thirds majority. The proposed amendment, which sought to reserve seats for women in parliament and state assemblies, was met with considerable opposition.

Commitment to Women’s Safety and Empowerment

Throughout his address, Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu reiterated the importance of women’s safety and empowerment. He assured attendees that his administration would be steadfast in its commitment to advancing women’s rights and dignity within society.

He cited previous social issues, such as dowry practices, which have shown signs of improvement over time, highlighting a significant shift in societal attitudes towards daughters. Naidu expressed optimism about the ongoing transformation and the need to continue advocating for reforms that uplift women.

In conclusion, the Chief Minister’s remarks positioned the TDP as a proactive force in promoting women’s representation in governance. By championing the 33 per cent quota, Naidu aims to reinforce the party’s commitment to inclusivity and social justice within the political landscape of Andhra Pradesh.
