Champat Rai Defends Himself as SIT Report Intensifies Trust Row

The CSR Journal Magazine

General Secretary Champat Rai issued a strong public statement following the Special Investigation Team’s preliminary report, which allegedly cleared him of misconduct related to the Ayodhya Ram Temple Trust. His remarks ignited renewed discussions within political and organisational circles, occurring only a day after the report shifted focus to other members of the trust.

In his open letter addressed to Ram devotees, Rai labelled the allegations against him as unfounded and announced plans to meticulously address each claim. He highlighted his long-standing association with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and his involvement in the Ayodhya Ram Temple movement dating back to 1991.

Leaked Statement Intensifies Scrutiny

Following Rai’s public response, parts of a statement he submitted to the SIT were leaked, which revealed his distancing from the financial management of temple donations. In the document, Rai asserted that he was not involved in counting donations or securing bank deposits. This claim raises questions about his oversight of financial procedures related to the temple.

The leaked statement brought renewed attention to Anil Mishra, another trust member who is reportedly a signatory to the banking agreement. The SIT’s preliminary findings have raised significant concerns regarding Mishra’s involvement, prompting sources to indicate he is set to be questioned further as investigations unfold.

Despite Rai’s affirmative response from the SIT, Mishra continues to face scrutiny while the investigation progresses.

Trust Defends Champat Rai Amidst Controversy

In an exclusive interview, the trust treasurer, Govind Giri, defended Champat Rai, calling him “spotless but stubborn.” He acknowledged potential lapses but stated that they did not constitute wrongdoing. Giri characterised Rai’s actions as negligent rather than criminal, asserting that he has not engaged in any wrongful behaviour.

During a subsequent trust meeting, members commended Rai’s contributions towards the temple’s construction and administration, further solidifying his support within the organisation despite ongoing scrutiny.

The meeting also featured intense discussions, as trust chairman Mahant Nritya Gopal Das expressed frustration over the alleged misappropriation of donations. After considerable persuasion from senior members, he agreed to attend the meeting along with other saint members who were initially hesitant.

Trust Takes Steps Towards Transparency and Restructuring

In response to the allegations and the SIT’s findings, the trust publicly released a comprehensive inventory of jewellery and valuable gifts received as donations at the temple. This action appears to be aimed at addressing concerns regarding purported missing items and reassuring devotees during the ongoing investigation.

Moreover, the trust is contemplating administrative adjustments, including the formation of a three-member committee tasked with appointing a new Chief Executive Officer. The next trust meeting, on July 22, is anticipated to discuss these changes and the potential announcement of a new Executive General Secretary as part of restoring order within the organisation.

As investigators press on with their inquiries, especially focused on Anil Mishra, the situation surrounding the Ram Temple Trust remains dynamic. With a final report from the SIT still pending, the controversy continues to evolve as both the trust and its members engage in efforts to regain public confidence and transparency.
