Cancer Explosion in Tamil Nadu: Over 1 Lakh New Cases in a Single Year

The CSR Journal Magazine

For the first time in history, over 1 lakh fresh cancer cases have been recorded in a year in Tamil Nadu. These shocking details were revealed in the Parliament by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Over 1,00,097 fresh cases have been registered in the state, making this a sharp increase, and this has raised concerns in the health sector. Experts have pointed out that if not taken seriously these numbers can increase, more screening programmes and lifestyle interventions are required.

Over the past five years, there has been an upward trend. In 2020 there were 68,750 cases, in 2021 there were 76,968, in 2022 there were 89,265, in 2023 there were 92,816 and in 2024 there were 96,486 cases and now more than 1 lakh. This growing trend calls for urgent action and coordinated public health measures across Tamil Nadu districts.

Gender ratio in the new cancer data

As per the latest data, there are 53,542 women patients, and 46,555 men patients. Currently the total number of registered cases of cancer in Tamil Nadu is 1,09,097, this reflects that there is an increase in incidence and also improved survival, thus increasing a need for sustained medical support. Among all districts, Chennai topped with the maximum cases of 8,505, followed by Kancheepuram with 7,295 cases and Vellore with 6,525.

Health experts have blamed lifestyle, pollution exposure, stress, and delayed diagnosis as the key reasons behind the surge in the cases in Tamil Nadu.

Gender-Specific Cancer Patterns

Mouth cancer is the dominant one in men, mostly because of tobacco consumption, second highest cases of colorectal cancer and third stomach cancers. And among women, there are maximum cases of breast cancer, cervical and ovarian cancers. This trend clearly states that there is an urgent need for awareness and routine community screening. The study has also found that the maximum cases that have been detected are at the later stages and thus the chances of survival and treatment is negligible.

What measures need to be taken to combat cancer?

Regular exercise, healthy body weight, no tobacco and alcohol, and time-to-time screenings are must to lower cancer risk. If someone has lumps, loses weight suddenly, prolonged pain, these symptoms should not be ignored and urgent screening should be done.

The data submitted in the Parliament also reveals that there were 10,821 deaths in 2025 related to ovarian, breast, and cervical cancers alone. Health specialists have called these numbers as a wake up call for policymakers to prioritise public health awareness and screening.
