Brother of Slain BJP Aide Chandranath Demands Strict Punishment for Killers in Kolkata

The CSR Journal Magazine

The brother of Chandranath, who served as a personal assistant to BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, has called for strict penalties for those involved in his brother’s killing. The incident occurred on May 6, 2026, when Chandranath was attacked and later succumbed to his injuries at a hospital near Madhyamgram.

Dev Kumar, the younger brother of the victim, stated that the family had communicated with Chandranath earlier on the day of the incident, confirming that he had no known enemies. Dev Kumar expressed his concern, asserting that those behind the act should receive the harshest possible sentences.

In his remarks to the media, Dev Kumar mentioned that the family had last spoken with Chandranath around 2 PM on the fateful day, highlighting that they had been together before he left for Kolkata. He reiterated that his brother did not bear any grudges against anyone.

Political Reactions to the Murder

Following the murder, West Bengal BJP President Samik Bhattacharya accused the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) of failing to uphold the rule of law in the state. He suggested that the killing may be linked to political motives, branding it as a potential act of political vendetta.

Bhattacharya asserted that the nature of the crime signified a significant breakdown in law and order within West Bengal. He questioned whether the act was intended to convey a political message or had other underlying motives. An investigation is currently underway, with Bhattacharya asserting that the truth will soon emerge.

The BJP leader characterised the situation as severe, pointing out that the assailants had allegedly used a vehicle with altered chassis numbers to eliminate their target, shooting from a motorcycle as they blocked his path.

Details of the Attack

Suvendu Adhikari, the BJP leader and former aide’s boss, condemned the attack as a “cold-blooded and pre-planned murder”. He urged party workers to maintain calm while assuring them that the responsible parties would be apprehended and brought to justice.

Adhikari stated that the Director General of Police (DGP) had indicated that the murder was carefully orchestrated and involved reconnaissance lasting a couple of days. He insisted that the crime was not an ordinary one but rather a calculated attack.

An eyewitness to the shooting revealed that the assailant arrived on a motorcycle, reportedly firing at point-blank range before fleeing the scene. The witness described the shooter as appearing skilled and emphasised that the attack appeared thoroughly planned.

Demands for Investigation

In response to the incident, the All India Trinamool Congress has condemned the act of violence and has demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe, to be monitored by the courts. This appeal comes amidst the violent backdrop of the political atmosphere in West Bengal.

As tension rises in the wake of the murder, calls for justice are reverberating across party lines, with both BJP and TMC officials pushing for thorough investigations to ensure that the culprits are held accountable.

The tragic death of Chandranath has not only sparked demands for justice from his family but has also intensified ongoing political rivalries in the state. The coming days will likely see further developments as investigations progress and political parties react to this shocking incident.
