The ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has granted Prime Minister Tarique Rahman the authority to choose the party’s candidate for the upcoming presidential election. This decision was announced following a meeting of the BNP’s National Standing Committee held on Saturday. The meeting was chaired by Rahman, who also serves as the party chairman.

This strategic move comes in the wake of Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad assuming the role of acting president after the resignation of Mohammed Shahabuddin on July 24. The constitution mandates that a presidential election must occur within ninety days after the office becomes vacant, as required under Article 123(2).

According to local news sources, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, the BNP Secretary General, confirmed that the Standing Committee has entrusted Rahman with the responsibility to make decisions concerning the presidential election and to select an appropriate nominee for the party.

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed elaborated that the Election Commission has already indicated its readiness to conduct the presidential election. He commented, “Once the election schedule is announced, the party chairman and Prime Minister will determine the BNP’s candidate for the presidency.” His statements directly reflect the party’s intention to act quickly once the election date is set.

Despite the critical nature of the meeting, Ahmed noted that no specific nominees were discussed during this gathering.
