Tens of thousands sought entry, prompting Spanish authorities to mobilise resources for rescue and recovery operations. As of Sunday, most of the migrants had returned to Morocco, although the search for bodies in nearby waters continued, underscoring the tragic consequences of the crisis.

Spanish authorities reported the deaths of at least 72 migrants, with fatalities resulting from drowning and a stampede while attempting to traverse a breakwater barrier. Despite the alarming situation, local businesses reopened, and residents resumed their daily activities at cafes and restaurants. However, the emotional and social impact of this influx remained evident in the community.

Political Responses and Public Sentiment

The dramatic rise in Ceuta’s population, which surged more than fifty per cent during this period, reignited discussions on immigration policy within Europe. Many of the migrants, predominantly young men, returned to Morocco, while some sought to blend in among the local population. Alvise Prez, a member of the European Parliament, called for the expulsion of remaining migrants, leading to counter-protests from community members who felt the situation was being exploited by political opportunists. Tensions escalated, prompting police intervention to maintain order.

The unfolding events posed challenges to Ceuta’s long-standing reputation as a melting pot of cultures, including Christians, Muslims, Jews, and Hindus. Public sentiment was split, with some residents expressing concerns about potential divisions within the community. Eva Barrientos, a logistics worker, voiced fears about an impending cycle of conflict, suggesting that the harmony that previously characterised the enclave may be at risk.

Statements by notable figures, such as Vox leader Santiago Abascal, further heightened tensions as he characterised the migrant influx as an invasion, asserting that the government was failing to protect the borders. Such rhetoric may contribute to stoking fears and divisions within Ceuta, complicating efforts to maintain community unity.

The Pope also expressed his concern over the situation, calling for peace and stability in Ceuta amidst the backdrop of rising political tensions. As the city gradually resumed its routines, the tragic deaths and heightened political discourse continued to weigh heavily on its social fabric, leading to an uncertain future for its residents.
