BJP Hits Back at Rahul Gandhi Over NEET Remarks, Defends Action on Exam Irregularities

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has countered Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s remarks regarding the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) controversy. The party asserted that the Modi government acted promptly to address irregularities associated with the NEET-UG 2026 examination and expressed its solidarity with the student community.

Gandhi’s comments came after he called for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to either dismiss Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan or take personal responsibility for the situation. He accused the ruling party and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) of undermining India’s educational framework.

The NEET-UG examination, held on May 3, was cancelled due to claims of irregularities during the testing process. In response, BJP national spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari claimed the Congress was politicising the matter for its own benefit, reiterating the government’s commitment to corrective action.

Allegations of Political Opportunism Raised

Bhandari, in a statement on X, highlighted that the cancellation of the examination followed reports of irregularities, with a re-examination organised for June 21. He emphasised that the government took these measures without imposing any additional burden on the students involved.

He mentioned that the Centre had referred the matter to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) as soon as the allegations emerged. Additionally, Minister Pradhan had publicly acknowledged the issue and accepted accountability, while arrests linked to the alleged paper leak were also made in various regions, including Jaipur and Gurugram.

Response from the Opposition

In contrast, Gandhi expressed his discontent regarding the current government’s handling of the NEET issue, asserting that the efforts of the students were squandered. He referred to claims that the examination question paper was being circulated on WhatsApp just two days prior to the test.

Gandhi suggested the Minister of Education dismissed committee recommendations aimed at preventing such issues, arguing that they were disregarded due to political affiliations within the committee. He stated that the government’s actions have severely compromised the integrity of the education system.

Pradhan announced that the NEET-UG re-examination is scheduled for June 21, and additionally stated that future tests would transition to a computer-based format as part of sweeping reforms in the examination system.

The ongoing dialogue surrounding the NEET issue underscores the contentious nature of educational policies in India, with both major political parties leveraging the situation to advance their respective narratives regarding governance and accountability within the education sector.
