Tension has escalated in Samastipur district, Bihar, following the alleged beating to death of a man in Harpur Bhindi village on Wednesday. The victim, identified as Kusheshwar Rai, was reportedly attacked by miscreants while he was on his way home after a financial transaction. Rai’s family claims he had just sold a piece of land and was carrying Rs 2 lakh, which he received as part of the payment.

According to family accounts, Rai was intercepted by unidentified individuals who assaulted him. The attack resulted in severe injuries, and he succumbed on the spot. Family members noted that the bag containing the money was missing, leading them to suspect a robbery. They further alleged that he might have been forced to ingest a poisonous substance, although the precise cause of death has not been confirmed by authorities.

Community Response and Protest

The violent incident ignited outrage among the local community. Residents of Harpur Bhindi village staged a protest by blocking National Highway-28, specifically the route connecting Samastipur to Patna and Muzaffarpur. Demonstrators displayed their anger by burning tyres, resulting in significant traffic disruptions and long queues of vehicles on the highway.

Protesters voiced their demands for the immediate arrest of those responsible for the attack and called for a comprehensive investigation into the incident. Despite the presence of police personnel who attempted to negotiate with the demonstrators, the protesters remained adamant, insisting that their demands be met.

The blockade continued until senior police officials arrived and assured the protesters that prompt actions would be taken in response to the incident. Following this assurance, the protesters finally agreed to lift the blockade, allowing for the resumption of traffic on the highway.

Ongoing Investigation and Autopsy

The police have taken the deceased’s body into custody and transported it to the Samastipur Sadar Hospital for a post-mortem examination as part of the investigation process. Authorities have commenced inquiries to establish the circumstances surrounding the attack and to identify the perpetrators.

While the motive behind the alleged killing remains unclear, law enforcement agencies are working diligently to gather evidence and identify suspects. Police have urged anyone with information regarding the incident to come forward to aid in the investigation.
