Bengaluru Ranks As India’s City With Highest Household Income

The CSR Journal Magazine

The latest income statistics have revealed that Bengaluru leads as the city with the highest average household income in India. Surprisingly, this data indicates that traditional contenders like Mumbai and Delhi are not in the top two positions. Bengaluru boasts an impressive average annual household income nearing Rs 28 lakh, while Chandigarh closely follows with a similar income level.

According to the research conducted by PRICE and Tata Sons Research, these findings are projected for the financial years 2025-26. Delhi is ranked third in this analysis, reporting an average household income of approximately Rs 26 lakh. Despite its reputation as India’s financial capital, Mumbai occupies the fifth position, with an average household income of about Rs 25 lakh.

This emerging data suggests that significant household earnings are increasingly characteristic of cities that excel in industries such as technology, manufacturing, and services, rather than being confined solely to the largest metropolitan areas.

Comparison Among Other Cities

The rankings continue to present an interesting overview when it comes to the following cities after the top five. Pune, Thiruvananthapuram, Surat, and Hyderabad have all reported average household incomes that range from approximately Rs 22 lakh to Rs 24 lakh annually. This close grouping indicates diminishing income disparities among these urban centres.

Further down the list, Coimbatore shows an average income of around Rs 20 lakh, while cities like Ahmedabad, Kochi, and Chennai report incomes near Rs 19 lakh. The relatively similar income figures suggest that numerous growing urban locations across India are sharing comparable earning potentials despite their geographic differences.

This data reveals a shifting paradigm in which several smaller and emerging urban centres are experiencing noteworthy growth in household income levels, breaking the traditional metrics associated with India’s wealthiest cities.

Lower Ranked Cities Also Demonstrate Economic Strength

The overall landscape indicated by this report suggests that cities known for thriving technology, service, and manufacturing sectors have a notable capacity for household wealth. Bengaluru’s rise to the top highlights its expansive technology sector, and Chandigarh’s position indicates a robust earning capacity despite being smaller in scale compared to other metropolitan areas.

Delhi and Mumbai, despite their lower rankings, remain important urban centres in India. The findings showcase a shift where not only major metropolitan areas are witnessing growth, as cities like Vadodara and Pune continue to gain prominence in income levels, thereby reshaping the economic structure across the country.
