Balochistan Liberation Army Preparing for Armed Struggle Against Pakistan

The CSR Journal Magazine

According to defence expert TP Tyagi, the recent Jaffar Express incident indicates that the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) has evolved beyond a minor insurgent group. Tyagi stated in an interview with ANI that the inclusion of a female suicide bomber wing within the BLA marks a significant escalation in their activities. He emphasised that this newfound militarisation highlights the BLA’s commitment to armed resistance against Pakistan in their pursuit of independence.

Tyagi elaborated on the emerging complexities in the region, asserting that the BLA is not operating in isolation. He pointed out the simultaneous rise of other militant factions such as Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan and the Afghan Taliban, all of which contribute to increasing unrest against the Pakistani government. He indicated that various communities, notably in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and Sindh, are also experiencing agitation against governmental authority, further complicating the situation.

According to Tyagi, public sentiment in Pakistan is increasingly hostile towards General Munir, who has taken actions perceived as detrimental to Muslim interests. He cited the general’s alignment with various international initiatives that have alienated segments of the population, further exacerbating social tensions within the country.

Details of the Attack on Jaffar Express

TP Tyagi shared specific details regarding the Jaffar Express attack, which occurred in Quetta, the capital of Balochistan. He reported that the incident involved a coordinated suicide attack using a vehicle loaded with explosives. The target was reportedly situated near the headquarters of Pakistan’s Frontier Corps. Initial reports indicate that more than 30 individuals have lost their lives, and 70 to 80 people have sustained injuries, although a precise breakdown of casualties among soldiers and civilians is still pending confirmation.

Officials stated that the explosion was caused by an explosive-laden vehicle that impacted one of the train’s carriages as it passed a signal at Chaman Phatak. The explosion’s intensity led to the derailing of multiple coaches, significantly disrupting the train service. The blast occurred shortly after 8 AM, resulting in three coaches, including the locomotive, being derailed, while two additional coaches overturned.

This attack, as Tyagi indicated, is not an isolated incident but rather part of a broader pattern of violence targeting civilian infrastructure in the region. The BLA has previously claimed responsibility for attacks in Balochistan, raising concerns about security in the area and the challenges faced by government forces in maintaining order.

Concerns About Pakistan’s Internal Stability

Tyagi further expressed scepticism regarding Pakistan’s role in international mediation, particularly in efforts between the United States and Iran. He characterised Pakistan’s attempts to act as a mediator while simultaneously grappling with internal strife as “ridiculous.” He viewed this contradiction as indicative of a potentially deepening civil conflict within the country.

In his analysis, Tyagi suggested that the combination of internal dissent and external diplomatic efforts underscores the precariousness of Pakistan’s current political landscape. As various factions rise against the established government, the likelihood of escalating violence appears to grow, heightening fears among civilians and prompting calls for stability.

The implications of these developments are significant, as they may affect not just local governance, but also the broader geopolitical context in South Asia. The ongoing unrest and the actions of militant groups like the BLA could have lasting ramifications for regional security and international relations.
