Apple has significantly enhanced its desktop range with the introduction of new Mac mini and Mac Studio models. The Mac mini is now powered by the company’s first 2nm M6 chip, while the Mac Studio features the latest M5 Max and M5 Ultra processors. These enhancements are designed to focus on artificial intelligence capabilities, alongside improved connectivity and storage options.

In India, the pricing for the Mac mini with the M6 chip starts at Rs 99,900, and the M5 Pro version begins at Rs 2,09,900. For the Mac Studio, customers can expect to pay Rs 2,79,900 for the M5 Max version and Rs 6,29,900 for the M5 Ultra variant. For educational institutions, discounted prices start at Rs 88,990 for the Mac mini and go up to Rs 5,84,900 for the Mac Studio with the M5 Ultra.

Pre-orders for all four models are currently open via Apple’s online store and Store app. The models will be accessible at Apple Store locations and authorised retailers starting from September 22.

Focus on Artificial Intelligence with Mac Mini

The introduction of the M6 chip marks a significant advancement in the functionality of the new Mac mini. This processor, featuring a 12-core CPU and a 12-core GPU, is multitasking-friendly, especially for artificial intelligence workloads due to the addition of two 16-core Neural Engines. Apple claims that the M6 Mac mini delivers performance enhancements of up to two times the graphics capability and four times the AI performance compared to the M4 model.

The compact desktop model begins with a configuration of 16GB unified memory and 256GB storage, with capacity for expansion to 32GB RAM and 2TB storage. For users needing greater processing power, the Mac mini with M5 Pro offers a 15-core CPU and a 12-core GPU, starting with 24GB of memory and 512GB of storage. Options for memory can be increased to 64GB and storage up to 8TB.

Upgraded connectivity features include support for Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 across both versions of the Mac mini, along with 2.5Gb Ethernet as the new standard, replacing the previous 1Gb Ethernet. A more robust 10Gb Ethernet option is also available for users requiring faster wired connections.

Mac Studio’s Power for Professional Workloads

The Mac Studio is tailored for a professional audience, integrating M5 Max and M5 Ultra configurations suited for demanding tasks, particularly in AI and media production. The M5 Max version can support configurations with a GPU of up to 40 cores and offers options for 128GB unified memory and 8TB storage.

One of the standout features of the M5 Ultra is its architecture that combines two M5 Max dies using Apple’s UltraFusion technology. This configuration can achieve up to a 36-core CPU and an 80-core GPU, with memory options reaching 512GB and storage capacities that can extend to 16TB.

Additionally, the SSD architecture of the Mac Studio has been upgraded to PCIe Gen 6, purportedly doubling storage speed. Both models support Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, making them suitable for high-performance tasks. An important addition is the genlock support over USB-C, beneficial for precise synchronisation in professional video production environments.
