The West Bengal Health Department has sought a detailed report via video conference regarding the tragic deaths of 10 infants within a single day at Malda Medical College and Hospital. The incident, which occurred in August during the second week of the month, came to light after the hospital uploaded the data to the state health department’s official portal. The death certificates listed multiple critical conditions, including severe respiratory distress and jaundice, as the causes of death.

Hospital Authorities Defend Response

Initially, allegations surfaced that hospital authorities attempted to keep the incident under wraps. However, once the records appeared online, it triggered widespread concern and prompted immediate intervention from the state health administration.

Addressing the situation, Hospital Superintendent Prasenjit Bar confirmed the deaths and the subsequent directive from higher authorities. “Ten infants passed away at this medical college on the same day. We have been asked to submit a comprehensive report on this matter, and we are currently compiling all relevant documents to send to the higher authorities,” stated Bar.

Breakdown of Medical Cases

According to the medical college’s initial explanations, 8 of the 10 infants were brought to the facility in extremely critical condition from outside nursing homes. Only two of the newborns were delivered directly at the medical college.

Medical evaluations revealed severe congenital complications:

Four newborns suffered from critical heart defects right from birth.

Two infants experienced acute respiratory distress.

The remaining children battled various other complex medical issues.

Despite intensive efforts by the attending medical staff, the infants could not be saved. However, as senior health officials remain unsatisfied with the preliminary verbal clarifications provided by the hospital, a formal, exhaustive report has been officially requested to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatalities.
