The CSR Journal Magazine

The trailer for Chumbak has been released, offering a look into a heartwarming family comedy set in a vibrant neighbourhood of Mumbai. This series revolves around the interconnected lives of five families residing in close proximity and is scheduled to premiere on September 10 on Netflix.

Chumbak Trailer Introduces a Lively Mumbai Neighbourhood

The narrative unfolds in Chumbak Colony, located in Chembur, showcasing a dynamic interplay between neighbours and friends. The trailer portrays the complexities of familial relationships, marital disputes, neighbourhood chatter, and a healthy dose of comedic misunderstandings that arise from these interactions.

Chumbak Colony is depicted as a space where the borders separating family and neighbours are nearly indistinct. Characters in the trailer reference their roles as parental figures and children to each other, establishing a sense of community where everyone is invested in each other’s affairs.

Love, Marriage and Divorce Fuel the Chaos

At the heart of Chumbak’s comedic storytelling are several intricate relationships. Neena Gupta and Deven Bhojani portray Rajni and Kuku, a married couple whose frequent conflicts provide a comedic backdrop. Another central duo, Dharmendra and Kiran, played by Sumeet Raghvan and Sandeepa Dhar, demonstrate an unconventional dynamic that contributes to the series’ humour.

As the trailer progresses, a significant development occurs when one character announces a divorce, stating, “My son is asking for a divorce.” This revelation is soon followed by Rajni’s declaration of ending her own marriage, stating, “I’m divorcing your uncle. And that is final.” In a moment of triumph, she expresses her newfound freedom, asserting, “I’m free. I’m going to live a little for myself too!”

The announcement of personal crises quickly draws the attention of the entire neighbourhood, illustrating how individual problems transform into communal matters, adding layers to the narrative.

Neena Gupta, Deven Bhojani Lead Chumbak’s Ensemble Cast

Chumbak boasts an extensive ensemble cast, including Neena Gupta as Rajni Merchant and Deven Bhojani as her husband Kuku Merchant. The show features Sumeet Raghvan and Sandeepa Dhar as Dharmendra and Kiran Kejriwal, alongside Arjun Bijlani and Helly Shah, who play Mickey and Twinkle Oberoi. The supporting cast includes Sumeet Vyas and Manasi Parekh as Aditya and Priyanka Khanna, with Delnaaz Irani, Anant V Joshi, and Amyra Dastur representing the Taraporewala family.

This series aims to reflect the familiar dynamics of neighbourhoods, where residents are deeply intertwined in one another’s daily lives, often providing unsolicited opinions and becoming involved in personal matters without hesitation.

Chumbak is produced by Hats Off Productions, known for successful comedies like Sarabhai vs Sarabhai and Khichdi. The show has been crafted and directed by Aatish Kapadia, with Jamnadas (JD) Majethia and Kapadia serving as producers.
