Toxic Outperforms Dhurandhar at Indian Box Office Opening Day

The CSR Journal Magazine

Toxic has effectively overcome negative feedback and online criticism to outperform Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar on its opening day in India. By 12:40 pm on August 26, the film directed by Geetu Mohandas had reportedly collected Rs 31.76 crore nett across 9,003 tracked shows, bringing its total India gross to Rs 37.48 crore. The film’s release coincided with the Onam holiday, leading to high audience turnout nationwide, despite discussions about its violent content and intimate sequences.

The occupancy rates for Toxic indicate a robust performance in its home state, with the Kannada version achieving an impressive 77.69 per cent occupancy. In stark contrast, the Telugu version garnered 57.08 per cent, while the Tamil and Malayalam adaptations recorded 45.25 per cent and 40.13 per cent, respectively. The Hindi version maintained a lower occupancy rate of 37.85 per cent.

In comparison, Dhurandhar generated Rs 28.60 crore nett and Rs 33.60 crore gross on its inaugural day at the Indian box office. This positioning sets the stage for a competitive landscape between the two films.

Initial Expectations for Toxic

Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups entered the market with trade expectations estimating a worldwide Day 1 collection of between Rs 100 crore and Rs 120 crore. This projection would place it in the same league as some of the biggest Indian film openers of recent years. Being Yash’s first project since KGF: Chapter 2, the film’s success at the higher end of the expected range could align it with major blockbusters of the industry.

For further context, films like Animal and Jawan set high benchmarks, with Animal achieving a worldwide gross of Rs 116 crore and an Indian nett of Rs 63.80 crore on its first day, while Jawan tallied Rs 129.13 crore globally. Toxic’s Hindi version is anticipated to contribute more than Rs 40 crore to its total.

If it successfully crosses Rs 100 crore worldwide, Toxic would become the second Kannada film to do so, following KGF: Chapter 2. The film’s expected success is attributed to its extensive distribution across over 12,000 screens worldwide, along with Lionsgate handling the international English version.

Advance Sales and Market Sentiment

The buildup to Toxic’s release saw strong advance sales, with over 1 million tickets sold for its first day. Total advance sales in India reached Rs 58.27 crore, covering 25,654 shows, excluding block seats. Including those seats, the total stood at Rs 73.43 crore, while worldwide pre-bookings were around Rs 85 crore. Notably, the film also generated substantial interest in foreign markets, including the United States.

The Hindi market plays a crucial role in the film’s overall success prospects. Initial projections for the Hindi version were over Rs 20 crore, but positive responses to the trailer and increasing advance bookings contributed to higher expectations.

As of 10 am on the release day, Toxic was screening across 5,334 shows and had registered an India nett of Rs 19.18 crore, leading to an India gross of Rs 22.63 crore at that time. The film has captured considerable attention, notably due to the steamy intimate scenes and provocative imagery of women. The Central Board of Film Certification approved it without any cuts, granting it an A certificate.
