The Assam government announced its commitment to provide extensive aid to individuals impacted by the severe floods affecting Upper Assam’s Jorhat, Sivasagar, and Charaideo districts. This information was conveyed in a press release from the BJP Assam Pradesh on July 22. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma personally visited several flood relief camps in these areas to assess the situation and to engage with families seeking shelter.

During his visits, the Chief Minister assured residents that essential services would be uninterrupted, with provisions for medical care, food, safe drinking water, and other basic necessities being made available. He further committed to assisting families in recovering from the loss of homes and important documents due to the floods.

In a significant announcement, Sarma revealed that the state would allocate Rs 4 lakh as immediate ex gratia support to the relatives of each individual who has died as a result of the flooding. This measure aims to provide urgent assistance during a critically distressing time.

Political Leadership and Collaboration

Dilip Saikia, the President of BJP Assam Pradesh, has encouraged district officials and party volunteers in the affected regions to offer all possible help to those in distress. His directive aims to mobilise resources and enhance community support during this challenging period.

Prior to this, on July 20, Saikia had addressed Members of Parliament in the Lok Sabha regarding the flood situation in Assam, a move that was highlighted as a pivotal step in bringing national attention to the crisis. This initiative is considered significant within the framework of India’s parliamentary democracy.

The Chief Minister has given specific responsibilities to Water Resources and Flood Control Minister Sushanta Borgohain and other cabinet ministers, appointing them to oversee the coordination of rescue and relief efforts in the regions affected by the disaster. This structured approach is intended to enhance the effectiveness of the response initiatives already in motion.

Community Resilience and Future Preparedness

Amidst ongoing flood challenges, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pijush Hazarika addressed the Assam Legislative Assembly, acknowledging the government’s preparedness for natural disasters. However, he emphasised that the suddenness of the recent flooding left little room for preemptive measures. Hazarika reassured the assembly that every effort would be made to support those affected by the floods.

According to BJP Assam Pradesh Spokesperson Dr Devajit Mahanta, the party remains united in its efforts to support the affected populace. He reaffirmed the commitment to help the state recover from this disaster through solidarity and mutual assistance.

Current estimates indicate that over 800,000 individuals have been affected by the flooding in Assam. The Chief Minister expressed a commitment to reach out to every impacted individual, striving to alleviate their suffering and provide comprehensive support during this crisis.
