The CSR Journal Magazine

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the Maharaj Prithu Flyover, a significant addition to Guwahati’s transport network. This flyover, which spans 4.2 km and features four lanes, connects Dighali Pukhuri and Noonmati. The construction involved an investment of ₹852.68 crore.

The project received government approval on June 26, 2023, with the foundation stone being laid on November 16, 2023. Initially set to take 36 months for completion, the flyover was finished in just 28 months, highlighting effective planning and execution.

Key Features of the Flyover

The Maharaj Prithu Flyover consists of 129 pillars and utilizes a steel girder superstructure. Chief Minister Sarma emphasized that its completion would alleviate traffic congestion and significantly reduce travel times for commuters. He credited the success of the project to advanced planning, technical expertise, and collaborative efforts among the involved teams.

Future Enhancements Planned for the Area

During the inauguration, Sarma announced upcoming enhancements, including the construction of a rotary at Guwahati Club and connections with the Ulubari flyover. Additionally, improvements are planned for drainage systems from Dighali Pukhuri to Noonmati, along with repairs to roads and the installation of high-quality street lighting. Sarma noted that GNB Road is one of the most trafficked routes in Guwahati, often leading to delays. He stated that the new flyover would ease the burden on this road and help mitigate air and noise pollution.

Commemorating Historical Legacy

The Chief Minister described the flyover as a symbol of ‘Bikash and Virasat,’ naming it in honor of Maharaj Prithu as a tribute to Assam’s rich history. He paid homage to the king, who was known for his bravery in defending the region against foreign invaders, particularly Bakhtiyar Khilji. Sarma highlighted the importance of recognizing and honoring such historical figures through public infrastructure.

Community Support Acknowledged

Addressing the challenges faced during construction, which occurred on a major road, Sarma expressed gratitude for the support from the local community, stating that their cooperation played a vital role in the timely completion of the project. He also mentioned that the government will soon allocate land pattas to residents, having received around 12,000 applications for land rights.

Flyover Opens to Public Walkthrough

The flyover is scheduled to open for vehicle traffic on March 14, but in a unique initiative, the government will allow pedestrians to walk on the flyover for three days beforehand. This will enable the public to experience the structure’s benefits firsthand. Sarma also outlined plans to address the artificial flooding issues in Guwahati and mentioned that work on the city’s ring road and proposed metro rail connectivity would commence upon its completion.

Key figures present at the inauguration included Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs Jayanta Mallabaruah, Member of Parliament Bijuli Kalita Medhi, MLA Siddhartha Bhattacharya, and Guwahati Municipal Corporation Mayor Mrigen Sarania. Their participation underscored the importance of the event in the broader context of urban development in Assam.
