Meghalaya Forms SIT Following Violence Against Assam Tourist Vehicles

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Meghalaya government has formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the violent incidents that occurred in Shillong on August 19. The SIT is tasked with identifying individuals involved in the disturbances and ensuring their prosecution under the law. The decision to establish this team was made after a high-level meeting between officials from Assam and Meghalaya in Guwahati, focusing on restoring normalcy and enhancing cooperation between the two states.

Details of the Violence and Its Aftermath

According to officials, the violence resulted in injuries to sixteen individuals, destruction of two vehicles by fire, and damage to approximately thirty-one others. The unrest reportedly stemmed from a black-flag motorcycle rally organised by the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU). The rally, which aimed to address various local issues, devolved into chaos, leading to stone-pelting, assaults, and vandalism across different areas of Shillong.

As part of the ongoing investigation, the authorities have allegedly identified five masked individuals involved in the attacks on tourist vehicles registered in Assam. The SIT will focus on further identifying those responsible and ensuring they face appropriate legal consequences. There have been fifteen First Information Reports (FIRs) registered in relation to the incidents, with police apprehending three senior KSU leaders shortly after the violence erupted.

The KSU leaders—president Raymond Kharjana, vice-president Pynkmenlang Sanmiet, and general secretary Reuben Najiar—were arrested on the night of August 19 and have since been placed in judicial custody. Among the demands put forth by the KSU during the rally was the cancellation of a public hearing for Shree Cement Ltd, which was scheduled to take place in Daistong village, located in the East Jaintia Hills district.

Safety Measures Implemented for Assam Vehicles

In response to the unrest, officials have confirmed that over 3,770 vehicles registered in Assam have been escorted safely out of Meghalaya and back into Assam. The violence has escalated tensions between the two states and caused significant disruptions to traffic, especially at Jorabat, where protests and blockades have taken place.

The SIT will investigate the timeline of the events that unfolded during the August 19 disturbances. They will work to establish a clear sequence of actions that led to the violence, which has now become a focal point for ensuring accountability among those involved.

The situation continues to necessitate careful monitoring as both states aim to navigate the aftermath of the conflict while seeking to manage local grievances and restore public order. The formation of the SIT marks a critical step towards addressing the issues raised by the KSU and mitigating future unrest in the region.
