The Assam government is actively working towards establishing its own satellite, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced. He stated that this initiative would position Assam as the first state in India to develop its own earth observation system. The satellite, set to be named ‘AssamSAT’, will be created under the ‘DBLOTT model’—Design, Build, Launch, Operate, Train and Transfer. Sarma remarked on the significance of this project in a recent social media update.

To facilitate the selection of a suitable partner, the government invited Expressions of Interest from the private sector earlier this year. According to Sarma, there has been considerable interest from Indian companies engaged in the space sector. Currently, the selection process is in its final stages, and dedicated committees are thoroughly examining the proposals submitted by potential partners.

This initiative marks a significant transition for Assam, shifting from being solely a consumer of satellite data to an active contributor within the space technology ecosystem. The aim is to enhance the capability for data-driven governance and decision-making across various sectors.

Objectives and Strategic Importance of AssamSAT

The satellite is expected to significantly bolster the state’s ability to collect data integral to socio-economic projects. When announcing the budget for 2025-26, then Finance Minister Ajanta Neog had highlighted the objective of creating this satellite. It is intended to support critical areas such as agriculture, disaster management, and infrastructure development, alongside enhancing border security and police operations.

Neog elaborated on the partnership with IN-SPACe (Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre). This collaboration with the Department of Space within the Government of India aims to assure a steady and reliable flow of data necessary for implementing essential socio-economic initiatives.

By utilising AssamSAT, the state government anticipates improved efficiency in governance, ensuring that policies are informed by accurate and timely information. This strategic move holds the potential to greatly impact various sectors, enhancing the overall development and security of the region.
