Assam Assembly Elections: Himanta Biswa Sarma Predicts NDA Victory, Gaurav Gogoi Sees Change Ahead

The CSR Journal Magazine

The political landscape in Assam has become increasingly heated as the state approaches its Assembly elections scheduled for April 9. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has asserted that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) will secure between 90 to 100 seats in the 126-member Assembly. In a sharp rebuttal, Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi described Sarma as “desperate” and expressed confidence that a shift away from the “decade of corruption” is imminent.

Sarma’s comments included a derogatory remark directed at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, whom he labelled a “registered paagal.” This heightened rhetoric underscores the polarisation characterising the campaign as various allegations and counterclaims dominate discussions among political leaders.

As campaigning ramps up, Sarma expressed optimism regarding the BJP’s chances. He linked the election message closely to issues of national security and development and indicated that Congress has historically failed to address infiltration concerns. He stated that his government has “liberated” land during its tenure, framing these issues as central to the BJP’s campaign narrative.

BJP Accusations Against Congress Rise

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has been vocal in his criticism of the Congress party, alleging that it enabled illegal infiltration during its years in power. Shah claimed that the BJP has embarked on corrective measures, successfully reclaiming approximately 1.5 lakh acres of land from alleged infiltrators. His promises of renewed actions if the BJP retains power strike a chord with their foundational security agenda.

Supporting this stance, Assam Minister Sarbananda Sonowal highlighted the BJP’s commitment to the constitutional protection of indigenous populations. His assertions included the ongoing eviction drives and peace accords aimed at restoring stability in the state. He portrayed the BJP government as a source of progress compared to what he termed a legacy of neglect during Congress’s governance.

Moreover, Minister Pijush Hazarika focused on development milestones achieved by the BJP, including substantial growth in medical education and infrastructure, stating that the party has opened sixteen medical colleges compared to six built in seventy years under previous administrations. He also promised two to 2.5 lakh government jobs, further emphasising the BJP’s commitment to creating employment opportunities.

High-Stakes Constituencies Become Battlegrounds

Jorhat, known for its tea industry, has emerged as a key electoral battleground, with Gogoi contesting against BJP’s Hitendra Nath Goswami. This constituency’s diverse demographic, including tea garden workers and various communities, adds complexity to the electoral dynamics. While Gogoi leverages his family legacy and appeal to youth, Goswami banks on his established local network.

The Jalukbari constituency, where Sarma seeks re-election, has been characterised by a long-standing BJP presence, evidenced by his significant victory margin in the previous elections. It brings together an evolving electorate, reflecting both continuity and change within Assam’s political fabric.

In Dispur, BJP candidate Pradyut Bordoloi faces off against notable challengers, including independent Jayant Kumar Das, showcasing a politically charged environment. The contest here speaks to broader issues concerning government policy and youth engagement, as Bordoloi claims to represent a vision for governance and development.

As the election date nears, Assam faces a pivotal moment. The contest appears not only as a battle for seats but also a referendum on continued governance under the BJP-led NDA, or a significant transformation represented by the opposition alliance. With campaigning intensifying, citizens are poised to determine the future direction of the state on polling day.
