The CSR Journal Magazine

Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde announced that all Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) schools will remain shut until tomorrow, July 7. This closure may extend for an additional day or two, given the persistent rainfall affecting the city. During a press briefing, Tawde highlighted that private companies have been advised to implement work-from-home policies to ensure the safety of employees.

Residents have been receiving alert messages every thirty minutes, advising them to stay indoors until July 8-10. Tawde stated that a ‘Red’ alert has been issued due to forecasts predicting heavy rains, strong winds, and high tides. She reiterated the importance of avoiding outdoor activities during this period.

“Local train services are still operational,” remarked Tawde. “However, we urge people to refrain from venturing outside due to the adverse weather conditions.” The municipal authorities are prioritising safety and are fully committed to managing the situation effectively.

Current Weather Conditions and Forecast

According to a forecast from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, residents can expect heavy, continuous rainfall throughout the day. As of 8 AM, the city recorded an average rainfall of 105.24 mm over the last 24 hours. The Eastern Suburbs experienced even higher averages, with rainfall measuring 161.11 mm, while the Western Suburbs recorded 159.40 mm.

The weather is also expected to include gusty winds, reaching speeds of 60-70 kilometres per hour. The authorities have upgraded the weather warning to a Red Alert to signify the severity of the conditions. Citizens are being urged to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions during this period.

In addition to the heavy rainfall, the local authorities are monitoring tidal conditions closely. A high tide of 4.08 metres is anticipated at 3:56 PM today, with a subsequent low tide of 1.52 metres expected at 10:13 PM. On Tuesday, the tide will peak again at 3.44 metres at 4:38 AM, followed by a low tide of 1.86 metres at 9:59 AM.

Public Safety Measures and Recommendations

The municipal administration is currently operating on a war footing to manage the heavy rainfall’s impact. Various safety measures have been implemented to ensure the well-being of citizens. Tawde and other officials have urged people to remain indoors, especially during peak rainfall hours.

Tawde emphasised the importance of community cooperation in adhering to safety guidelines. Residents are encouraged to prepare for potential disruptions and to remain informed by monitoring weather updates regularly.

To mitigate risks associated with flooding and strong winds, it is crucial for residents to avoid unnecessary travel and to stay updated through reliable sources. The BMC will continue to monitor the situation closely and will provide further updates as needed.
