The government plans to urge the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) to hasten its investigation into the alarming altitude drop experienced by Air India flight AI2379, with an interim report anticipated within a month. This flight, which was travelling from Phuket to Delhi, faced a sudden 300-foot altitude variation during its cruise on August 4, resulting in injuries to 24 passengers and crew members.

Key Evidence and Investigative Support

Sources from the government indicated that investigators currently have access to crucial evidence pertinent to the case, including the aircraft’s Flight Data Recorder (FDR) and Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR). Additionally, medical examination records and witness testimonies are being gathered to support the investigation. “In contrast to the case involving flight AI171, all evidence has been secured in this instance,” sources stated.

On June 12, 2025, Air India flight AI171 tragically crashed shortly after its departure from Ahmedabad, resulting in the loss of 260 lives on board. The current inquiry aims to establish the circumstances surrounding the altitude loss in a timely manner, with efforts to fast-track the analysis of the FDR and CVR data.

Assistance in the investigation is being provided by the Bureau of Enquiry and Analysis for Civil Aviation Safety (BEA) from France, along with support from aircraft manufacturer Airbus. This collaboration is expected to facilitate a thorough examination of all relevant factors.

Psychoactive-Substance Screening Following Incident

Subsequent to the altitude incident, both pilots of flight AI2379 underwent mandatory psychoactive-substance screening. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has removed both pilots from active duty pending the completion of the investigation and related tests. This measure is aimed at ensuring safety in the aviation sector.

In light of these developments, the government has instructed the DGCA to reevaluate India’s framework for testing pilots and flying crew members for the presence of psychoactive substances. The DGCA has been tasked with examining testing protocols employed in other countries and determining whether enhancements or reforms are necessary for India’s existing systems.

There are considerations underway for establishing a more rigorous framework to address drug use among aviation personnel, which may include stricter enforcement measures and significant penalties for any proven violations. This initiative aims to bolster aviation safety standards throughout the country.

Comprehensive Investigation Underway

The AAIB has emphasised that its investigation is comprehensive, examining various aspects including technical, operational, medical, and human-factor evidence. They have cautioned against drawing conclusions based on isolated pieces of information until the investigation is fully completed.

The focus remains on meticulously analysing all facets of the incident to ensure that appropriate measures can be implemented to prevent similar occurrences in the future. The interim report expected within a month will provide initial insights, but the investigation will continue until all relevant factors have been thoroughly assessed.
