AAP Secures Major Victory in Punjab Civic Elections, Securing 954 out of 1,977 Wards

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has achieved a significant victory in the recent civic body elections held across Punjab on May 26, 2026. The party won a majority of municipal wards statewide, positioning itself favourably ahead of the upcoming 2027 Assembly elections. In this context, the results are seen as a key indicator of public sentiment towards AAP, particularly after the party faced recent challenges, including the departure of prominent member Raghav Chadha to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) along with six other leaders. This development had raised concerns regarding the party’s stability within Punjab.

In total, Punjab conducted civic elections for eight municipal corporations, 75 municipal councils, and 20 municipal committees. AAP obtained victory in five out of eight municipal corporations, which include Mohali, Barnala, Batala, Moga, and Bathinda. The Congress party won in Kapurthala, while the BJP gained control over Abohar and emerged as the largest party in Pathankot. As of the report’s filing, results had been declared for 1,963 out of the 1,977 wards that went to vote.

The electoral performance revealed that AAP secured 954 wards, with Congress receiving 390, independent candidates winning 251, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) obtaining 191, the BJP acquiring 170, and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) managing seven wards. A few ward results were still pending at the time of reporting, highlighting an ongoing process of results finalisation.

Voter Turnout and Overall Participation

The civic polls in Punjab witnessed a robust participation level, with a voter turnout of 63.94 per cent. A total of 7,554 candidates contested in these elections, which were conducted using paper ballots. The significant turnout is indicative of public engagement and interest in local governance issues.

Despite AAP’s success, the elections produced surprising results elsewhere, such as in Kapurthala Municipal Corporation, where the Congress won 31 out of 50 wards, marking a decisive victory. Furthermore, the BJP’s performance in Abohar was notable, and it gained considerable ground in Pathankot, emphasising the party’s ongoing efforts to expand its influence in urban areas.

In the municipal councils, AAP was the dominant force, reportedly winning close to 45 councils, while also securing successes in approximately ten municipal committees. These results are seen as a pivotal moment for the party as it heads towards the Assembly elections in 2027.

Political Reactions and Allegations from Opposition

In contrast, opposition parties raised concerns regarding alleged irregularities during the electoral process. Leaders from SAD claimed AAP misused state resources to influence results, with assertions that many voters were pressured despite their inclination towards the Akali party. Similarly, Congress raised issues regarding discrepancies in counting, particularly in areas where AAP reportedly claimed victory.

Political analysts remain cautious about interpreting these election results as indicative of future Assembly elections. They pointed out that historical trends in Punjab suggest that municipal election outcomes do not directly correlate with success in subsequent Assembly elections, citing previous instances involving various political parties.
